Pentax ist DS aprox lifespan

Hello folks.

A friend of mine is thinking of buying a used ist Ds, but he wants to know the rough lifespan/longivity of the shutter. How many exposures/pictures taken would be considered to many? 5k 10k 15k?

Thanks in advance.

I think all the lifespan of Pentax shutters are rated at 100,000 clicks.
That is the typical although if you get lucky you will get more than those and also there are some that conk out after just 12,000 or less.
There was a thread here before that showed the lifespan of these.
If it dies out though and Pentax replaces it, then it would be good as new and good for another 100,000.

I have an *istDS that still sees almost daily use and it now has 42,000+ shutter actuations.

Unless the shutter is defective, the number of shutter actuations on a used camera is really of little concern. Most people will upgrade their cameras long before the shutter reaches the end of its' service life.

FWIW my K100D is at 30,000 and still going The shutter click can be used as a bargaining piece though. That price sounds fair. You'll enjoy the camera.

I have had a DS since the beginning of 2005 and taken it to 20000 feet, to -30C blizzards, to hot 40C summers, salt spray, downpours, etc and it's still running great (belongs to a friend now).
