Teleconverter

Is there a good 2x teleconverter that works with the DA 50-200mm

Any Pentax-compatible 2X TC would *work*; the question is how *well*. In general, 2X TC's degrade IQ more than 1.4X TC's, and most TC's are designed to work best with primes, not zooms. Given that a 2X TC also causes you to lose two stops of light, which would make your 50-200 only f/11 wide open, and IQ is pretty bad unless you stop down another stop - f/16. All of which is to say, results would be very disappointing. What I've fopund is that even a 1.4X TC - which degrades IQ less than the 2X one - produces results that are no better than simply cropping an image from the lens without the TC. My guess is that any 2X TC would produce results that would be markedly *worse* than simply cropping.

Thanks Marc. Thats what I have researched. However, I was hoping for a silver bullet. I just want more reach. Maybe the 55-300 would be the solution

talking about teleconverters..

Could someone tell me (and us) how good these are and their (lack of) functions?
  • Kenko MC4 2x APK
(what does 'A' stands for? It seems that it is manual focus.. Is this a good one)?
  • Sears teleconverters (What is the quality of these TCs? Never heard of that brand..)
  • 7 element auto tele converter 2x mc for P/K (this is the only text on the TC, 7 element and MC are in green. Is this Pentax brand? no other info..)
The seller says it looks a lot like the Elicar one.. also unknown to me..

What other 'cheap' teleconverters could I find on ebay (around 60€)?
Is it better to find a good ol' tele lens rather than buying a TC?

And what about use of TCs in reverse mount macro-photography, someone did any experiments or has some experience?

Thanks.

captjsh, it's not worth adding a 2x TC to the 50-200, you'll be more frustrated than excited with the results.

The 55-300 is the way to go.

Better get a 55-300, even if I can get a Kenko MC4 2X for 30€???
For what price could I get a 55-300 (knowing that I'll have the 50-200WR f3.5-5.6)?
That would give me a 400... (maybe useable till 350mm?)

Got another idea with TC, just started the thread: reverse macro + TC

Well, somebody allready got the same idea no money, super macro
