Just finished the install and set the new Custom Function that changes the default behavior of the "SEL" button...works great. AF selection is much better now. Not sure what else was addressed in the update but this is a great start.

Wow, that was a fast response. Pentax didn't have a history using firmware to quickly fix bugs.

The Pentax US page for this seems to be down. You can also try the Pentax Japan English-language website.

Nothing listed about increased ISO performance though for those of you wondering. or maybe I am wrong and it simply isn't listed? What are your responses from those with the new firmware?

Well, JCPentax is posting here and I'd bet he and MANY other marketing and engineering types are monitoring this Forum and DPR.

Torphoto, I believe you posted in JC's thread about the AF point selection default behavior, didn't you?

Feels as if Pentax is changing a lot of things. When we look back in 5 years will we be thinking, "I was there when Pentax got thier mojo back?"

Good news, now we have K7 firmware to analize.
Uses same encryption as K20D, but flash size seems to be 16Mb since K-m, so sizew now is larger - 10Mb up to 8Mb.

A little off topic....but

Not sure it will address the issue you had....if it does you can always send back the Canon... If this model isn't supporting you at work....then it really isn't much of a decision.

Not that you should have to to overcome an issue with a camera...but are 2 k7s cheaper than the canon?...if so then overheating the sensor won't be an issue and you would always have a backup body?

I notice on the Pentax site it says "Improved stability for general performance
For example: when left- end focus point is selected, function of auto focus may rarely become unstable in particular shooting condition:"

This implies some other changes may have been done to improve general performance.
Hopefully users can report back, eg Some complained that K7 over exposes.

So the OK button will function like the function button did on the K20D when the custom setting is changed from the default value and the AF selector is set to SEL. Nice for people coming from another Pentax DSLR!! Great and fast move from Pentax. This shows they are still a customer oriented company.

I'm not sure yet I will use this new customer function however. I had started contemplating the use of this new approach and had decided to give it a chance to discover its advantages. Might leave it like this for a little while longer before going back to the old way.

There's still a few things I preferred in the K20D that a firmware upgrade may fix:
- top LCD back light
- full info status screen. I don't like it popping up all the time, and setting the option not to show it always, never shows it anymore. The quick access menu under the info button is great, but I would like a way to have both.

But this is more than I expected already!

AF selection is MUCH better now.

Seems the 'horizon correct' and Tv > 1/180 seems to be better too..... based on quick and low light testing. Anyone else care to test?

For all of the technical writers on the forum...

Now that the K-7 has a new feature choice (C-36) as a result of firmware update 1.01, may I ask someone to draft a coherent update note for additon to the manual that explains the default (1) and option (2)?

Cheers...

Here's a link to a PDF from the Pentax site that explains the new CF.
