K100D overexposes with dedicated flash

When using the pop-up flash exposure is fine, but when a dedicated flash is fitted it overexposes, with all settings on automatic. This happens with a genuine Pentax flash as well as with a 3rd party make.
Does anyone have a solution?

I'm not a flash expert by any means, but perhaps you can go into some more detail like: which flash, which camera, what settings, etc.

Is it a P-TTL flash (ie a 360, 540, 200 FGZ) - if not, you will not have correct exposure regardless of the auto setting. But more info, as above, would be handy

Camera and flash details

The Camera is a Pentax K100D and the flash is a Sigma EF 500 Super.
I also tested with a Pentax flash designed for the K100D, belonging to a relative and the same problem exists with his flash on my Camera.
However, he uses a Pentax K100D and a K200d and we tested both flashes on those cameras and they work perfectly.
Therefore it seems as if I have a camera setting problem.

I believe you have to set your cam to "P-TTL auto" mode in the flash menu, when you use a dedicated flash in automatic mode. You could compare the camera settings with your friends camera.
