Why these speckles at iso 100 in K-7 that wasn't there with the K10D

I'm glad you worked the problem, and then posted the solution! Some would have chosen the knee-jerk solution to send the camera back for a refund, followed by a never ending screed against the K-7. Then they would have started a blog about it.

yeah default out of the box K-7 is set to sharper (FINE) settings IIRC.

And when you compare it to the K10 photo after he fixed the problem, one can see a vast difference in IQ between the two cameras.

RAW definitely solves a lot of problems. I use it exclusively, but then again, I am pretty compulsive at trying to make certain that every photo is just right from a sharpening, white balance stand point.

I have only been shooting in RAW with the K10D. I didn't want to use the wrong RAW converter with the K-7, and I was also lazy with these 'tests', so decided to use JPEG. Now, I have lightroom 2.4, so will be shooting RAW only.

A happy ending! That last K-7 shot is the best looking thermostate I've seen in a long time. Keep it in case dpreview will make a challange competition regarding thermostates

Thanks to this thread.. I think I gonna use -4 Sharpness for my JPEG in my K7 now.

No wonder I was finding all the "grains" a bit too big for my taste compared to my K20 and K10. I fiddled with my NR settings.. thinking maybe too much NR that caused the grain.

The funny thing about K7 JPEG setting is, I can't use a +1 sharpness and -3 fine sharpness, whereas in K20D, you can set both independent of each other. Maybe its a bug????

[Edit: No.. its not.. I must be dreaming that up.. sorry

]

Anyway... some picture to show my findings..
Picture 1,2,3,4 are set at Sharpness +4 (max), +1 (Default for Bright), -2, -4 (min)

Notice the grains in the white area of the 'W'
