What to make of this focus test?

I think in shot #3 what you are interpreting as OOF is actually just very low contrast.

like i mentioned you are not suppose to stop down the lens, and if you look closely at pics 1 & 3 you will see the 1/3 - 2/3 focus area = good

Don't forget that AF gives different results depending on the color of the light. For instance, I find that I have to use a different setting for incandescent light vs daylight on my K10D.
