This type of thing is becoming quite popular actually. Private Rentals of consumer goods. Like the poster said, he'll leave appropriate collateral and the owner would get $20-30 for something sitting on a shelf.

Regards,
Mike

if someone cannot rent from CameraLensRentals.com then I sure as heck am not gonna rent anything to them, unless of course they leave me a $750 cash deposit which will be returned less a fee for cleaning and such by Pentax.

Then again people are liable to buy into this as a way to generate cash? I dunno...not when there are business which specialize in rentals. Weird...

craigslist and the like are LOCAL services (atleast that is their intent)

renting something like a camera online, personaly, i would not do it.

if you do it the craigs list way

a john smith comes to your home, you give him the camera, you both agree that it is functioning, he gives you collateral.

comes back in a week, and gives it back into your hands, you both agree that it is still functioning, he gives you a rental fee, and you give him back his collateral.

if this doesnt instill trust in you, i dont know what does.

Depends what the collateral is...
Would you value the collateral as much as the cam?
Probably not.

It would depend on how much cash he had on-hand and what his wife and/or girlfriend looked like.
