everyday lense for K110D??? what?

"everyday" means different things to everyone I know;

to me it's long distance shots in the Blue Ridge mountains....someday I'll get that picture to frame over my fireplace but I won't buy it!
pics of my dogs (always moving)
pretty flowers to print/frame
dog pics at shelters to post on websites
vacations; family...'normal stuff'
maybe real estate photography

What do you recommend? I have the K110D body on order....I have old 35mm pentax lenses but thought perhaps you all would recommend a new lense to replace my SMC Pentax-FA 28-50mm f3.5-4.7

Here your chance to help a DSLR newbie! Thanks in advance

Maybe something that goes from a wide angle to a telephoto...like the Pentax 18-250mm zoom. I linked the review from this website's lens reviews. I have the Pentax 55-300 which is a wonderful lens, but only goes from normal (55) to telephoto (300). The 18 (wide angle) to 250 (telephoto) might meet your neeeds. I haven't tried the 18-250.

I have the Tamron 18-200 which typically is a lot cheaper than the 18-250 since it is an older model ($249 from B&H after rebate). I like it, particularly at the local Dog Park. I can catch distant dogs running and quickly catch the dog standing at my feet looking up at me!

Some people would never buy a super zoom because it does not have the image quality of the four prime lenses needed to do the same job. I don't have the budget for that many primes nor would I want to change between them at the dusty dog park.

Pick up a cheap Pentax DA 18-55/3.5-5.6. It is the modern standard kit zoom; you should be able to find a used one for $50-100. It will give you an equivalent field of view to your old 28-80 and is a great all-round lens to start with.

For long distance pics, you won't need to get an 18-200 or 18-250 super zoom since (as you stated in your other thread) you already have a Sigma 70-300 which will work great with your DSLR. Sigma still makes this old lens design and it is still a good choice for a cheap and cheerful tele zoom, even on digital.

Thanks everyone...

I just did spring for a Pentax SMCP-DA 18mm - 55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLRs. I don't shoot in 'weather' or marine environments so didnt' want to spring for the WR but the II got some good reviews over the original. I think I got a good price on it from adorama. So new K110D with this lense and it'll be fun! I also have a Sigma 70-300 but it's not an every day thing to lug around.

That 18-250 lens is on my wish list, though!

Denise you won't be dissapointed with your choice of camera. As for a lense to put on it.If the DA lenses are out of your price range, then may I suggest the Pentax FA 28-200mm.Very good allrounder.

Smart move.
Perhaps you may find this “Tips and Tricks” article for the K100D useful.

I can also recommend the Tamron 18-250/3.5-6.3. It even has decent close focusing capabilities (for close ups). The lens is very versatile but doesn't give you the DOF (depth of field) control you have with so-called fast primes or fast (less versatile and more expensive) zooms.
