K7 - Is it smarter than me???

I thought Manual Mode should be just that - manual.

But when I alter the aperture, or the shutter speed, the camera seems to want to stay within a range, for example. it may only allow shutter speeds of 1/25 to 1/80, then go back to 1/25 instead of faster shutters. Or same with aperture, f4 to f8, then back to f4.

Is it trying to fit these into a usable range?? I might be shooting in very low light situations for example, but I want a closed aperture for DOF, and can extend the time.... but it won't let me...

Does this sound typical? Is there a work-around?

Thanks for tips / help

Al

The only thing I can think of is, may be in the custom menu you had instructed the camera to do 'auto EV compensation'.

Yes, Auto EV compensation (Item 9 in the Custom menu) is meant to be an "Error Proof" setting for the camera which prevents the user from accidentally dialing a wrong exposure.

But it can be infuriating if you forgot that you set it ON. It does a similar job in Av and Tv modes. It will force the camera back to the Minimum or Maximum Aperture/Shutter speed which will allow a proper exposure.

Default is "OFF" but check if you may have accidentally set it "ON".

Thanks!

You've taken away one of my frustrations. It's been a good day.

PS: I have resolved to re-read the Magic Lantern guide to my K10D end to end. I think that I've forgotten what I didn't understand in the first place. (If Yogi Berra didn't say that, he should have.)

Your question: "K7 - Is it smarter than me???"

The answer is: "Yes it is. Be careful, make sure it doesn't sneak up on you while you are sleeping"
