K-7 BG4 grip made of plastic?

I have just received the batterigrip for my K-7, which is really recommended if you want to hold the camera vertically.

Any way. Is it just me, or is the grip really made of plastic?

Guess the OP was expecting magnesium alloy grip, just like the body...
The grip is plastic, probably because plastics costs less then magnesium, and the grip does not contain such vital parts as the body, so i guess Pentax thought plastics will suffice...

nikon offers the MB-D10 in magnesium for about the same (street) price as the D-BG4 so I suppose its certainly not too much to ask to have the grip in the same material as the body. I just find it surprising that you expected something other than plastic.

Interestingly, I compared my *istD (plastic body) with my new K7 (magnesium body) and quite honestly I can't tell the difference. The surface finish and appearance is almost exactly the same.

(That's not to say however that I'm not a little disappointed to hear that the K7 grip is not made of the same material as the camera body).

Well, for the price here in Denmark ($373,-), I would expect only the best.

Time will tell if plastic is good enough :-)

...and I already have the grip, and it's a joy to use btw. The camera balances very nice when using the 50-135, which without the grip (+battery) feels a little front-heavy.

Uh oh, another meaningless detail for measurebators and gear addicts to quibble about.

In the end, I cant see where it would make one fifth of one percent of any difference. It's not like you are supposed to park your car on it.

Well, I sure do not find the body-material of the K-7 a meaningless detail...

But the grip is made of plastic. Nobody's going to change that now, and whether it's good or bad does not really make any difference if you already got the K-7.

When I tap my K100ds with my fingernail, the sound is completely different than on K-7. Of course the surface finish is almost the same.

I was told by a Pentax rep that the baseplate of the grip is metal the rest is plastic.

i would be a little peeved finding out that it's plastic... but then again i have a k200d and it's all plastic! at least in will serve you will in extremes of temperatures.
