Example of nasty banding (pattern noise) with Pentax K20D

Example of nasty banding (pattern noise) with Pentax K20D

The K20D is a fine camera. But this shooting was a nasty surprise.

User Photo Gallery - Miscellaneous Photos

shows part of picture taken with K20D on tripod on the summit of a mountain near telecommunications installations (Radio and Mobile Phone Transmitters).
  1. Banding visible in JPG and RAW (DNG) formats.
  2. Banding visible in all pictures taken at this site on a tripod.
  3. Banding most visible in underexposed areas.
  4. Banding not (clearly) visible on pictures taken free-hand with shake control at this site.

Any idea of how to filter this noise out?

I believe DSLR sensors are susceptible to EMF fields. So you may be seeing its effects if you were near power lines. Other than enclosing the camera in an EMF-proof shield, I don't see how this could be avoided except by increasing the distance between you and the EMF emitter.

Quite a different kind of banding that what I expected.
Though not unexpected interference-type artifact given the proximity to a powerful radio transmitter.

As long as you're not shooting a view from the transmitter or the transmitter itself, just shoot away from it.

As the others have stated, thats not banding.

That is EMF noise.

I expect ALL DSLR's are suseptable.

Try film.
