New K20d arrived today

Hell froze over today. UPS delivered something 4 days before it was suppossed to. I recieved my new k20d from Adorama today and, unlike the previous one ordered through B&H, this one is actaually "new." The box was pristine and everthing looked great. Only 220 Shutter count (as oppossed to the 390 on the returned one). I jus managed to set up most of the custom settings. This camera certainly has some heft. Its goign to take a while to get used to all of the external buttons. I keep confusing the ok button with the AF button.

But so far, so good. A couple of very quick shots seem to be better than shots from my k100ds. Colors look great

Going to be a long weekend. I think I will be spending a lot of time in the "study" with the manual.

Are you saying they are selling used cameras as new? What do you mean, "the box was pristine--only 220 shutter count"

They test the cameras before they go out, so it's normal to have a few hundred shots on a brand new camera. Not sure if the OP had *other* evidence his first K20D was not new, but 390 shots is not out of line in the least.

220 vs 390 shutter count is insignificant.
Your camera is fine, now go an enjoy it!

Yes. First camera already had language set and the time zone set for the midwest. It also had some default settings altered, smudges on LCD screen, inordinate amount of dust on mirror out of the box, and the box itself showed signs of wear such as creases in the "tounge" flaps and unusual wear on the edges of the box.

My new camera needed the language/time zone set (just as the manual says), had no dust on the mirror, no default settings altered, and just looked and felt "new" out of the box.

I LOVE this new camera. I took the shot below earlier tonight at dusk. Handheld, no post-processing (although being the doof I am, I forgot to switch the camera to RAW mode from my earlier practice session). Just amazing color and detail!

I had a similar experience with them, but shutter count was over a thousand--disturbing. I reported this to Pentax directly--in Colorado. They felt the shutter count was the result of a memory card problem which can result when you use a memory card from another camera. I could not prove it one way or the other, but my box was anything but new looking too.

Surely, a thousand shots are not needed to test anyone's camera. However, I trusted the system and stayed with my first K20d, though at first I felt much discomfort from the situation. I am happy to report the camera has worked flawlessly, so I am okay with it now.
