Massive K-7 rant! WHY!?!!

So, I pick up my brand new K7 x2 from SRS Microsystems in Watford today and have set myself two full days to 'train' myself on them before a gig on Saturday. Fine, right?

Well I thought so too...until I hooked up a Metz 54-AF1 to one of the K-7s. I don't know about any of you but I have spent days with my K10D trying to figure out the tricks of P-TTL, then giving up and switching to the A setting on the Metz. Well, I now wish I had taken a video of the moment I took my first P-TTL shot bounce-flash on-camera with the K-7. My jaw dropped to the ground, I almost fainted. It worked! I tried again to make sure it wasn't a fluke. No, exactly the same again! It worked! I messed with the settings, It Still Worked!

By this point I was almost unhinged. I changed around the scene, took photos of other things, and the damn thing just kept on working. I could almost weep for my time spend coaxing my poor K10D to do anything half this consistent.

...then there's the almost silent shutter, the amazing white balance unter tungsten, the AF speed...none of which I really believed or understood properly until I saw them, there's the +-5 stops metering and copensation (which it seems only I ever got REALLY excited about anyway)

So I'm asking myself why I didn't pre-order, why it has taken me MONTHS to actually pull the trigger! I am so angry with myself I could laugh with utter abandon because now I have and I just don't care...

...thank you Pentax. You rock!

Awesome! Thanks for sharing your great experience with the K-7 so far. I was one that pre-ordered, and although I can't say I had moments like these, I do really enjoy the camera. Beautiful construction and operation in a nice compact package.

I love my K-7 too! I didn't pre-order, but picked one up a couple days after release. I couldn't be happier and didn't mind paying a bit of a premium to have the camera for our busy season this year.

I wasn't going to get one until the price dropped a few hundred. Then I got to play with one in the store. I took one home on the spot. I've said it before, this is not a revamped K20; it's a whole new animal.

LOL! I was going to keep my k10 as back-up, but after comparing the two cameras, I knew the k10 was going to end up as a paper-weight. It contributed to my 10-17 fisheye purchased though!

Now I just need to save up for another year to get a second k-7 for back-up.

Yup, the K-7 Rocks !

Up to the point I first turned it on, I had been leery whether it had been wise to buy it at the full launch price.....I haven't looked back since...

It's the best deal of any pro-sumer camera out there. Awesome build quality and dependable performance.

I use HSS occasionally for portrait fill flash in bright daylight....it works very well on the K-7.

About 1/2 stop brighter than my old K100D, but no issue with me.
The K100D P-TTL flash often underexposed (there are many old threads in Pentaxforums on the subject for K10D/K100D) , I think the K-7 gets it just right.

I think another user has a problem with a specialised application, HSS for macros, usually at high-ISOs, I think. Not really my area of photographic interest, so I can't really comment on it.

Well there you go. Keep the rant going with each jaw-dropping revelation you get with your new K-7.

Great stuff, although I never had consistency issues with my K10D/K20D buddied up with an AF540FGZ. Can't speak for the Metz's, but I've been pleased with P-TTL from the word go using this flash.

I was frustrated using my AF540FGZ until I got my K-7

All I can say is its so different shooting flash now.

P-TTL is indeed awesome coming form the K10D... , wait till you put the camera on AWB and take an indoor shot and you would not be able to hold back you tears ....put the camera on green metering (evaluative) and you will literally slap yourself silly for waiting this long.....

The high res LCD, 100% VF, 5.2fps, better AF-C, better ergonmics, lens adjustments, superb auto-iso, LV, composition adjustment for tiltt and shift effect, HD video, LV for MF, Auto horizon level/level indicator, HD video, higher useable iso, ability to crop more, muffled shutter, better low light AF accuracy and lock, better built-in flash etc.. are all just icing on the cake.

HSS is absolutley awesome..but, I only use it when a shutter of more than 1/18o'th is needed due to bright ambient light, as it is intended to be used.
