OK, I just tested the camera this morning and it looks like gokenin's guess is right. The test shot at 1/3000th sec displayed the problem clearly; at 1/2000th sec it was there, too, although less clearly. At 1/1000th sec, the exposure looked normal to me.

I just completed a web service form over at pentaxusa.com. Will see what happens.

If the shutter curtain fell just before all the light from the flash got to the rest of the subject in the frame, this might be an explanation. But the sky can't be illuminated by flash, so I'm not sure it can be that even if you were shooting with flash...

(Fill flash...expose for the sky, fire a flash for the foreground)

And I was just trying to eliminate the basics first

That's what it seems to be. Cameras have 2 curtains (I believe...older ones do for sure), one that goes up with the mirror and one that opens once the mirror is out of the way and exposes the sensor/film. When one can't get out of the way fast enough...
