Wow, nice find. That is definitely a steal for a factory refurb.

any concern that the refurbs only come with a 90 day warranty?
best buy does not offer any extended plans on the k20...
i'm gonna call pentax when they open to see if they offer an additional extended warranty..
i'll update...

I think as with any electronic device, if it is going to fail it will be from the get-go. I have always been of the mindset that a refurb is just as good if not better than new, being given the complete run-down at the factory. You may even end up with a new return or straight new product returned from a store which was never sold. In regards to the K20d specifically, I don't recall anything specific regarding its longevity to date (i.e. no specific issue has arisen from this camera line that would be cause for concern).

Considering that is better than some of the used offers in the market place, if I needed a backup (and didn't want that to be a Kx) I would be all over this!

just checked with square trade... the 499.99 camera would cost 59.99 for only 1 year
on a refurbished k20d.....
most already know this, but pentax itself does not issue extended warranties on refurbs, nor do they sell refurbs.....

If you can find a brand new K20D it still somes bundled with 3 years

If you can find a brand new K20D, it still somes bundled with 3 years.

Refurbs usually do not qualify for any factory warranty. You'll have to locate a 3rd party vendor that you want to deal with if the refurb'd K20D fails. WalMart still lists K20D for $599. You never know, they may get more?

Walmart.com: Pentax K20D Black 14.6 MP (Body Only) Digital SLR, Weather Resistant, LiveView, * Bonus Extended 3 Year Warranty: Digital Cameras

Pentax K20D Black 14.6 MP (Body Only) Digital SLR, Weather Resistant, LiveView, * Bonus Extended 3 Year Warranty $599.88

List Price: $999.99
You Save: $400.11 (40%)

That all said, K20D is a great camera. Keeps me shooting Pentax mount.

Isn't K-7 just above $1,000 thesedays and it too comes bundled with 3 year factory authorized warranty.

Seems to me adding $400 to $500 more is better use of 1st $500 spent.

Best Buy refurbs

Looks like I may end up buying from Best Buy after all.
Those ain't bad prices for a Pentax body (albeit refurbished) when compared to some used body prices elsewhere.

The warranty issue though gives me pause.
Anybody have experience with getting alternate warranty?

Yes it doesn't give you full warranty. But the price of this is cheaper than most used, and better than used by other people who don't provide warranty with their K20D at all.

May people when heard of the word refurb tend to back away, but this is factory refurb. Factory refurb meaning they sent it back to Pentax and had actual genuine parts replaced so it's like-new. This is one steal of a deal, even for 3 months of warranty.

Wow, what a deal.

Brand new member here, underwhelmed with my seldom-used Canon 350D and ready to commit to Pentax for the great IQ and in-camera shake reduction, great lenses, not to mention price-to-performance ratio. I had been waiting for the K-x to ship--love the small form factor and all the features.

I've been lurking the forum, looking also at K200 and K20, as weather-resistance is a great thing. I'm drawn toward the more advanced features of those cameras, yet a little put off by the size and weight. Hmmm. The camera that stays home is not the one that takes the great shot, if you know what I mean.

So--just ordered a refurb K20 at $549 including tax from the Best Buy website. Free shipping. Wow! Now for some glass. And I wonder if my better half will notice if I wind up with a chunky new SLR *and* a little tiny one???

referb means someone returned a product to the store for WHATEVER reason

the reason could be as silly as "just not liking it" to "just not liking it after it fell 4 feet into a puddle of water"

buy at your own risk.

If you live in a large urban area you're almost better off on the forum marketplace and check out local gear first hand.

They're factory refurbs, not a store recondition or rebox. Big difference. I've been buying Mac refurbs for years with no issues. You save a lot, get warranty, and looks as good as new. If the price works, buy one. I *may*. may hold me over until I can spring for the K7.
