Not necessarily. I might be mistaken, but the embedded JPEG preview is a low-quality version. Also, you can apply effects and adjust the quality of the JPEG output. These definitely would require a new JPEG to be rendered.

Maybe so, but regardless this is the second K7 body that I'll be returning because of "issues"... I'm quickly losing faith... I love the camera and it's functions, but this is getting worrysome.

I was led to believe that this was another advantage of shooting raw - the converter automatically removed hot pixels.

It is a benefit of shooting RAW, but there is no way that I should have 2 dozen+ hot pixels when shooting JPG on a camera that is less than 3 months old and has less than 2500 on the shutter. This leads me to believe that there is a sensor issue or JPG processing issue... Both of which are unacceptable, IMHO.

This is interesting - I updated my K20D when firmware v1.03 came out.

Now I checked the EXIF tags on pictures - it was showing v 1.03.00.09. Then I downloaded update file again today and run the update in the camera. Now new pictures have firmware tagged as 1.03.00.10.

Are you sure that's 1.03.xx.xx, and not 1.01.xx.xx? I think you've perhaps gotten a tad bit confused by all the numbers floating around. ;-)

The current release is 1.01.00.13, AFAIK

That's not the same issue being described here. It happened only with mirror lockup when using the two-second self-timer, and has been confirmed as being fixed in firmware 1.01.00.13 by one of the two people you've pointed to (New K-7 1.01.00.13 firmware is out [Page 1]: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review), as well as by several other users.

Far from being fixed, Maynerd suggests his particular problem is twice as bad with that firmware installed (which makes me wonder if he's tried pixel mapping after updating the firmware - perhaps the pixel map is cleared out with a firmware update?)

Sorry for the delay in updating this situation...

After picking up my replacement K7 (making sure the serial # was nowhere near my two originals), I immediately tested the issue (before updating firmware) and alas, I have the same problem... But what is odd, is that the firmware is listing as 1.00.00.04, which I don't recall ever hearing about before... can anyone confirm that this the version that was shipping with the K7 originally?

I'm not sure what to do... I figure I might as well try installing .13 again to see if maybe this whole situation is an anomaly and it might magically be fixed by doing things in a different sequence.

For the record, I've been testing this whole time by shooting a 2 to 4sec exposure @ ISO 800 - 1600 / f8 with the lens cap on... I also tried covering the lens with the palm of my hand, thinking some light might be leaking in from the lens cap causing weird effects - Nope. Has anyone else tried doing a longer exposure to see what results they get?

I hate to say it, but I'm starting to smell a D700 in the not too distant future... Just kidding... Not really... I don't know... What's a proud Pentaxian to do?
