A point on comparing today's zooms with primes...
If you're talking about shooting under ideal lighting conditions, sure, I got some awesome pictures with a Sigma 18-50 f/3.5-4.5. But how many times would an avid photographer be shooting in such conditions?

I'm no pro, but I've tried stretching the Sigma and Pentax kit lenses in more real-life difficult lighting, and they leave a lot to be desired. I'm not dismissing the kit lenses as useless at all - I still have it handy for a lot of general shots, but I find myself switching to my 50 prime for so many shots the kit lenses just can't take.

Situations where flash are not desired, fast lenses are vital. Otherwise take your chances...
