Back in the fold

Well, last night I had the opportunity to purchase a K-7 body for $1100 CDN, which is $400 off the cheapest that I can get it for here normally. I jumped at the chance, since I have no Pentax body currently, and I still have a DA14, DA21, and FA43.

I've been using a Panasonic L1 and Panasonic LX3 for the past 6 months. I'm keeping the LX3, but selling my L1. It's a nice camera, but the lenses are limited for what I like. Small primes, mostly. Wide angle. I have the nice Panny 14-50 f/2.8-3.5 but it's bulky and I just can't feel anything with it. I also have the Olympus 25 f/2.8, but it's not wide enough for a walk-around prime for me (oh, DA21, you had me at hello!).

The focus-by-wire is lifeless. No beginning or end, just a dull feel.

I miss wide angle, and didn't particularly like the options available in 4/3 - too expensive or too slow. I don't really enjoy zoom lenses.

Back in the fold with a K-7 and I can't wait to fit my DA21 to this new, compact body with a gorgeous 100% viewfinder. Video will be a treat to try - time for a larger SD card!

If you're looking for a Panasonic L1, check the fourthirdsphoto.com Marketplace.

Well welcome back Mike.
Interesting experience you've had with those Pannies.
4/3s seems like a different world altogether.
Enjoy your newfound Pentax prime outfit and hope to see more of your results here.

Welcome back. I have stayed away from 4/3 because of the very issues you stated. m4/3 may offer some use to me with the older lenses and for travel. How much time did you spend with 4/3s and any insight into the system from a user perspective?

Thanks

I love the LX3 - its wide angle lens, quick response, and RAW format are great. Very compact, I love it. It's nice to take anywhere.

I used the L1 from July 2008 to present. I loved the form factor of that body. The bounce flash was fantastic for social situations where direct flash was too harsh. Fitted with the Oly 25 2.8, it was a great compact setup. The focal length was longer than I prefer, however, for a one-lens situation. I like to do some live music photography, but the high ISO of the L1 was not up to par and did not find it to be a successful match. I was limited to 1600, and it wasn't very good. The viewfinder wasn't great, but it was nice to have the live view for some circumstances.
