Seems to me we've got placebo effect or something like it here. Pentax hasn't mentioned any change in AF or noise, and we have users here reporting wildly differing things.

For one person, the AF is better, noise is reduced, and the new sharpening is great. For another person with the exact same hardware and firmware, AF is far worse, noise is worse, and the new sharpening is awful.

I'm going to guess there's absolutely no change to AF or noise performance, and people are just seeing what they want (or in the case of jgredline, perhaps pessimistically expect) to.

jgredline, care to post any before / after examples with the exact same scene and exact same camera settings, showing how the noise is better with the old firmware than the new as you claim?

Nope, I am not trying to convince anyone of anything. I know my equipment very well...I had high hopes and alas no go. No problem. I merely sharing my own experience and going back to firmware 101 fixed it again. I hope you and others will get great results. As for me, well I have my K20D's and D700 so I am golden.

That's fine. I'm golden too - just updated to 1.02 myself, and have absolutely no AF problems (and I've been testing in low light on very low-contrast subjects). Can't say as I've noticed the AF assist light come on any more or less, incidentally.

Don't misunderstand me by the way, I don't think you're trying to convince or mislead anybody. I'm just speculating from the rather pessimistic tone of the post that perhaps you're seeing what your mind expects to. Frankly, I don't see a difference in noise before / after the 1.02 update - and had Pentax made any changes there I'd expect them to be touting it, and certainly wouldn't expect them to have made it worse even unintentionally.

The other changes don't touch any related image quality area, beyond that if you use the new higher-strength sharpening it's reasonable to expect that to possibly increase noise levels *when* it is applied, and not at any other time. On the contrary, if Pentax had done anything to work on noise, I'd expect them to be loudly advertising the fact. Fixing a little-noticed bug is something you do quietly so as not to call attention to your mistakes. Improving image quality in general, that's something you shout about to let everybody know you're the kind of company that hones and improves products.

Thought that might be the case - I just haven't used the K-7 much in situations where the AF lamp does anything, so I'm not that familiar with its algorithms, but it seemed to be behaving differently now than before, so I thought I'd throw it to the forums.

Noise seems the same.

I've only tried out a few test shots for V1.02, and I haven't seen anything noticeable in Image Quality one way or the other.
I shot under flourescent lighting at ISO3200, so any improvement or worsening would have been very obvious. More testing over the weekend, especially in daylight.

Most of my photography is actually done in daylight at low ISOs, but like everyone else I sometimes get so hung up about High-ISO performance, as if the camera spends most of its time in dimly lit corners

Holy crap my K7 with 1.02 HighISO ability is unbelievable it can even see through time!!

Anyone else having this serious problem? I seem to have trouble focussing on emperor Napoleon though due to all the temporal ISO noise.

1.01.00.09
1.01.00.05

I researched a link where to download

1.01.00.13

which is the most recent 1.01 version.

It is here:
-> Pentax Canada - K-7

My MD5SUM checksum results:

c29eea509c95f3deda16f546b5702ed1 FWDC204B.BIN (1.01.00.05)
c21cffdde129319d65a0c885067ea74d FWDC204B.BIN (1.01.00.09)

4d287f4588cae9bbd14df144407e143d FWDC204B.BIN (1.02.00.14)

Note: 2 posts below, eva2000 will verify that the download link given above is for version 1.01.00.13 indeed. Thanks.

Hello,

Did you have made these shots with NR Off ?
What are the results with the different levels of NR activated ?

I also posted some High ISO K-7 shots taken with new firmware, default NR settings- stragiht from the camera jpeg, NO PP appart from resizing. I don't have any issue with them. 3200 is starting to look a bit grainy, but still usable.

These aren't "pixel-peepable", but they do show what the images look like when viewed in a normal perspective, not 100% screen shots.

I would like to tinker with a program to apply NR to the raw files. What would be the ones to consider that support the K-7 PEF files??
