I guess that buying only one of the "superior" lenses would be sufficient to jump to cat 2, so everybody in cat 1 has only kit lenses and old lenses (this is my case).
Most people only need, wide zoom, long zoom and a fast 50. Now it's when you get to the "want" category ..heh

For Pentax with me it's the 16-50, 50-135 and 50 1.4 on a K200D now for whatever reason i double the lenses and i'm now waiting for PMA to decide add the K7 or something that might be replacing it? Mind you i have my original kit, 50-200, 10-17,31 and 77 ...i'm not selling or trading anything because i always lose out somehow LOL and this is just my Pentax system.

On a full frame body or film camera, yes. On a APS-c based camera, I rather have something around 30-35mm (below f/2) as I consider 50mm is to long.

Not necessarily. A new K10D over here is still available and costs just under US$1200 (more or less official exchange rate), a Kx around US$1000, a K20D around US$1600 and a K7 US$2400. If I take the average price ratio (for any camera or lens brand , US versus SA) that will probably include import duties, the K10D will still be US$900 and you can calculate the rest.

To put this a little in perspective, using official exchange rates a minimum salary will be around US$150/month (net), a starting IT helpdesk employee around US$700 (before tax).

I have seen one place where the K7 was around the mentioned price of the K20D, but that might be grey import or a mistake on the website.

The Kx and the K20D are including 18-55mm kit lens, the K7 in one occasion as well and at another occasion not (but on US$2400 it does not matter to much).

Please note: this is not a complaint, just to indicate to xephias. If I want to complain, I will start another thread

Sterretje, I realize that things may be different in other countries... I come from Argentina and technology is very expensive there too, so I know what you are talking about.

I should probably qualify my earlier reply, as to be applicable to US, and to people without a K7 (which is still priced over $1000).

Let's just say that I left the 2nd tier behind a long time ago...and there's at least $6K in that wish list at B&H.

In Guatemala, much digital technology is simply unavailable (legally), or has crippling duties imposed. A not-too-fancy laptop computer costs as much as a new house. So those who can afford it, fly from the USA with a little something extra tucked into their luggage. And fly TO the States with bags full of Pollo Loco, but that's another story. [NOTE: Prepare to salivate heavily on your first flight north on TACA.]

Well, with the new and not-quite-new Pentax gear, the remaining Nikon stuff, and the ST801 and Fujinon EBCs . . . and . . . well, it sure adds up. Toss in bags and such. And then I remembered the darkroom.

Must sell Nikkors. Then I'll feel a little better about it all.
