If you had to pick today, would you get a K7, or a K-x?

My K10D has gotten unreliable over the past few months, and now refuses to power on for weeks at a time. I'm going to send it in for repair, but I also want to get a new body this holiday season so I can use the K10D as my backup.

Right now I am torn right down the middle between the K7 and the K-x.
Both cameras seem to have great qualities and few drawbacks.

If you had to pick today, and if money was not an issue which camera would you get?

Money not an issue? K-7 for sure. for high ISO i'd buy a nice computer and batch process my files (different presets for different ISOs) with topaz denoise on export each time. What other disadvantage besides ISO/DR does the K-7 have?

Price difference? K-x for me.

I guess the much, much better high-ISO performance of the K-x is still bowling me over.

As far as I can tell, even with the best glass, the K-x beats the hell out of the K7 when it comes to low-light shooting.

The high ISO performance is getting me also. BUT, if I didn't think a pro camera with the best features of both was coming soon, I'd probably get the K-7 or keep the K20d for a while longer.

I'm guessing a K-8 or k30d or whatever will be here soon. I'm getting the K-x as a stop gap until that new camera comes out.

a few features I will miss?

AF adjustent
quiet shutter
shutter release cable jack

Yep. I'd sacrifice the 4-channel & high frame rate for the better high-iso in a heartbeat.

K-7 with K-x sensor would be literally impossible to resist. As it is, I'm having a hard time fighting off both the K-7 and K-x, combine the two into a super mutant hybrid and I'm just done resisting.

Well, I just traded in the K20D for a K-7, but I do believe I'll be getting a K-x in the next few months to complement it. So my answer is "both." They each have their advantages.

K-7 for sure. I'm perfectly happy with my K20D's sensor characteristics (purple blotches at high ISO notwithstanding, which I undstand has been fixed in the K-7).

For every other feature other than sensor? K-7.

But despite all that, I'm more than satisfied with holding onto my K20D for a while. I hope the K-8 is good!

At the same time though - the people that rushed out to buy K7 must be feeling a little green around the gills.

Obviously Pentax will engineer a new "pro" model around the "new" sensor making the K7 kinda redundant.

I don't know...

The K7 is still very new.

I mean, look at the time between the release of the K10D, and then the K20D.
And the time between the release of the K20D and the K7...

I don't think we're going to see another "pro" top-end DSLR from Pentax for at least another year or two.

I trade k20 over to k7 last week of August.

Would I buy k7 now ?
NO, I would wait for a firmware fix for k7 high iso/jpeg engine or for the k8 ...

(All the rest on k7 is ok. Only high iso/jpeg engine is not.)

The K-x is looking like a seriously awesome camera, and I am currently going back and forth between it and the K20D (slight edge K20D at the moment) but that having been said...

I can not imagine buying a K-x of the K7 if money was not an issue.

18 months from the original release date. Isn't that the usual span for things?

Hmm, I guess you're right...
It feels like longer...

Pentax K10D - Jan 2007
Pentax K20D - Feb 2008
Pentax K7 - July 2009

I guess I should just send my K10D in for repair and keep waiting.
I really like the K7, but the high ISO on the K-x is so much better that it's embarrassing.

At this rate, the new Pro-level Pentax will be released sometime around August, 2010.

I don't understand why ppl are making comparisons of two Pentax cameras that are COMPLETELY designed to be at different levels. That's like comparing apples to oranges, which is better?

IMO shouldn't we be comparing the K-7 to 50D, D90 and what not instead of K-X?
K-X instead should be compared to 500D (T1i), 450D and D3000, D5000
