ETTR is nice in theory, but shooting moving subjects in low light, you basically need to get a fast shutter speed by any menas necessary. Shooting 1/30" and ISO 3200 versus 1/30" at ISO 1600 and then pushing the result one stop yields essentially the same results - it's just a matter of whether the actual sensor reading is amplified in camera (perhaps with an analog amp, but quite possibly done digitally) or in PP. Sure, 1/15" at ISO 3200 would yield less noise, but so would 1/15" at ISO 1600 - unfortunately, that's also usually the difference between a reaosnable keeper rate versus total failure.

Hi Ash,

Taking the last shot as an example. If I had say a FA77 or say DA55 , I would put the focus point on the guitar as that would be high contrast and take it from there?

Tks,
Robbie

ps another lesson learned, stay off the sauce while manual focusing
Yes, that's the gist of it.
Choose the brightest (but not blandest) areas that have some detail for the AF mechanism to work off, and you have AF without the hunting.
