K-x DNG output can show annoying noisy band on RHS

One problem I have noticed with the K-x relates to its DNG output.

DNG's produced by the K-x with an ISO say above 1600 (not sure about the PEF - havent tried that) sometimes display this band on the right hand side of the image:

Screen capture cropped from Raw Therapee:

Faststone Image Viewer view of the same DNG (full size):

You can see this band if you open the DNG in Raw Therapee, Faststone Image Viewer, Picasa and IrfanView, for example, and view the RAW DNG.

However if you open the DNG up in the new Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4, or Lightroom 2.5, you will never see any such band.

In any of the JPG's produced in camera, or exported out of DCU4 or LR, the band is also never visible.

This band was not present in any K200D DNG's.

However it does seem that all DNG's have some sort of border or 'band' along the edge which must normally get masked out by the RAW interpreter.

Perhaps the RAW interpreter used by Picasa, RAW Therapee etc is handling this area of the RAW file differently from LR and DCU4.

Or the K-x imaging engine is doing something out of spec in terms of how it produces DNG's.

Anyway, this is something to be alert to if you use software like Picasa, RAW Therapee, Faststone etc and also use the K-x.

It is probably something Pentax should address in a firmware update. Whatever they were doing with the DNG's in the K200D was working fine.

This topic is a breakout from my general K-x impressions thread here:

That is because those raw converters are not compatible with the new camera. Raw therapee did the same with the K-7 until they updated the software for K-7.

Aha. Thanks for that info. I didn't know that.

And this applied even to DNG's, not proprietary PEF's?

At least with my K-7 and DNG, RawTherapee did the same.

I think the simple answer is this is not image data. It is not a fault. In my third party (John Neville) Silypix manual on page 28 when talking about cropping it says "in the case of some RAW files this may include data pixels beyond the image boundaries" My guess is that what you are seeing is the metadata related to the image.
