Advanced uses can spot the deficiencies and choose based on overall capabilities and features, which make the K-x stand out.
However, these are more entry level cameras and the less informed point & shooter that wants to buy their 1st DSLR will probably hear a lot of hyped sales "smoke and mirrors" that says CaNikon because CaNikon is CaNikon is CaNikon...and they will bite the bait and get reeled in by the name alone.

It's interesting that the K-x does seem to be pulling a few people away from Canon-Nikon, at least the the entry level. A couple of forum users here have jumped ship (from a D40 and a 40D) to a K-x, I notice. This is not just to do with the attractive K-x price to either I suspect, but all about the word speading virally that it has great IQ and does high ISO really well, as well as HD video.

The great IQ and high-ISO performance of the K-x, btw, you won't hear about in any Pentax K-x promotional material that I've seen. It's certainly been a feature of the reviews to date, and the forum chatter, so maybe that's how the word is getting out to Canikon users and others.

rawr, I'm assuming you're referring to me switching from the 40D? In the interest of fairness, I feel I should clarify that the sale of the 40D was planned from the moment I bought it a couple months ago: I bought it for a specific purpose that was best served by a specific lens for which the 40D was the most affordable body that met my standards.

I was planning on purchasing an Olympus E-P1 to replace the 40D (the idea is a small, portable camera for a backpacking-style month in South America) but decided on the K-x instead after checking out the sample images and the price (brand new, at that! I never buy new). So it may be more accurate to say that I switched from the E-P1 than from the 40D, since the 40D was on its way out no matter what. The K-x simply allowed me to shorten my inevitable path back to Pentax.

Fairness! Begone with your fairness. Fairness and balance are the last things we need in pentaxforums. You've clearly got a lot of learning to do.

But yeah, thanks for the correction.

Either way, I'm currently at a movie night with friends and I'm snapping away at my friend's antics at ISO 128000, 2mp jpeg setting and... it looks great. Reminds me of the 40D ISO 1600 (jpeg). I'm quite sure I could get some good 4x6 prints from these.

Probably not that good, but... sample

Keep in mind, that's low tungsten lighting, at the 2mp setting. Would use higher res but I'm stuck with a 16mb SD card until tomorrow.

Edit: borrowed a card out of a friend's camera. Full res: sample

RAW conversion coming up. UPDATE: Never mind, since my current workflow is 1)take pictures 2)put the card back in the friend's camera 3) use the friend's camera and cord to transfer to the computer, since my cord is at home. Problem is that the RAW files I shoot don't seem to show up when I connect the friend's camera to the computer. RAW files will have to wait, for me at least.

K-x 12800 does well enough. We don't need no stinking 128000:

MB?! Hehe, I'm kidding! But, that card has got to be close to its 10th birthday - were you throwing it a party?

16mb?

Didn't they stop making these in the early 1900's?

Haha no, it was more of a David-Bowie-movie-watching-party. It probably is about 5 years old, it most likely came as one of those freebie cards they included with compact digitals for a while. I dug it out due to the fact that all my cards are CF (a la 40D).

You bet. This here is what they refer to as "New Old Stock."

And yes, I meant 12800, not 128000. You know how a few drinks shrink some things and exxagerate others... and make you incapable of spelling exxagerate... I'll figure it out tomorrow.

Thanks. It really was very dim in there. The K-x let me do things my K200D simply could not, especially with a slow kit lens. I mean, f7, handheld, indoors under crappy ambient light and still get a decent exposure, let alone a decent noise-free shot like that one?
