DA L 55-300 K-x kit lens questions

Hello all.

How does the DA L 55-300 lens being sold with the K-x kit differ from the DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED? Supposedly the DA L is a “budget” version. I guess it was unrealistic, but I was hoping the 55-300 in the kit was the ED.

I know the normal DA 55-300 is a very good lens for the money, but since I don't know anything about the new lens, it has me rethinking my purchase of the 2 lens K-x kit.

Does anyone know if this new 55-300 is any good?

Any help would be appreciated it.

Thanks,
Bill

Optically the two lenses are exactly the same. The difference is that the regular DA 55-330 has the quick shift feature and a metal mount/a little sturdier construction, while the DA-L doesn't have those things. I think most people will be quite satisfied with the DA -L version, but if you're concerned about build quality and longevity, forego it in favor of the regular version.

I have not seen any data on a DA L 55-300. The other DA L lenses are optically the same as the DA verisons. The 'L' versions lack quick shift (the ability to manually adjust focus after autofocus is complete), and the bayonet is plastic, not metal, neither should be a show stopper IMHO.

Does a DA L 55-300 even exist?

yep, with the release of the K-x kits only. No hood, either, but you can just buy one.

I see it now...
I wonder why they even bothered to release an L version...

I think they released it just to drop the price for the "kit" sales... I mean honestly if it is truly the same optically... then it is a great deal in that KX kit package.

And I understand the dropping of quickshift and metal mount may save some money, but a 55-300 without a hood is a bit silly though! I mean really how much would that have cost?

Perhaps another sign that Pentax is dying... can no longer afford to sell kit lenses with hoods!

I guess this means Canon has been dying for a decade?

Seriously, what a crock that Canon doesn't include a hood with any consumer lens! Stickin' it to their mindless followers who just take it without compaint. Sad.

yep, I tested it with the Kx, Da Lens with silver Ring (rather than green ) black plastic mount. It is lighter than the normal DA but still has same qualities

Yep, as noted here there are only a few differences with the DA-L lenses from the regular versions. For the totally obsessive among us, there's a couple of other changes I haven't seen noted here, so to sum up:

* Plastic lens mount
* No quick-shift AF
* Slightly lighter
* No bundled lens hood
* No focus markings around the front of the focusing ring
* Silver instead of green trim ring
* Screen-printed instead of embossed silver badging
