K100ds: best DSLR ever, or greatest DSLR ever?

Give me your opinions please, as long as they fall into one of the two above catagories!

I can give you my opinion; right now it is my best DSLR ever. I have a K10D which I love also but my K100DS surpasses it it terms of it't versitility.

It is smaller and lighter. It fits into my big hand quite comfortably even with my pinky hanging. It is great for sports and macro with my Tamron 70-300. I can carry that combo all day with that lens without fatigue as I am a telephoto man. It is graet at ISO 800. It's 6 MP sensor is all I need and it does a gerat job. SR also rocks.

As far as being the best ever..... A bigger buffer, and faster FPS would put it over the top for me. A second e-dial maybe? WR?

It was a fine camera back then but it has been surpassed in image quality and responsiveness by subsequent newer models. If image quality is the principle criteria, the new K-x is the best Pentax camera ever. Time to stop lingering in the past...

What do you love about it Steve? As much as I like mine, I've been thinking of selling it in favour of a K-x. I take it that would be a downgrade to you?

actually from what I've read the k-x is a fine camera. I haven't seen one in person yet, but id be willing to bet it would be a good upgrade to the k100ds, orther than those few little missing features! . If I was a rich man I'd find a way to order some wacky color combo from Japan. I can say this - I once had a k2000 in my hands in a store, and the k100d fits my hands better.

I guess I was just trying to spread some k100 love!

K100D was my first dSLR ever. Will always be a first love, but sadly, time to move on...

I haven't handled a K-x yet, but that will definitely be a factor in my decision. I'll also need to take some comparative photos to study, and not just at high ISO. There's no doubt that the K100DS sets the bar pretty high for IQ within its limits.

started on a K100d and soon after got the K200d. That IMO, is (was) Pentax's gem body.

it's like your first car... no matter how bad and ugly it was, it got you where you wanted to go... a novel experience... i started with the k100d, and it was a great introductory platform... but i wanted a bit more, and have had my k200d for quite some time.... capable, weather sealed, and i still am learning new aspects and techniques....
but alas, i have no desire to go back to my old k100d.... i loved it, but it was time to move on...

it's too slow to be the greatest camera ever, but otherwise it is indeed the Nokia 3310 for Pentax cameras!

I have both a k100 and k200 and I have to say I am amazed everytime I look at pictures that I get from the 100. It is my Takumar camera and I love using it, tempted by the Kx I admit and if I get another camera then I may actually make the k100 into a fully IR camera

I would say the same!
Picture quality is better with my k100d that I love! ISO 400 is beautiful and the ergonomic is really fitting my taste!
My K10D is a great machine with lots of creative fonction but the picture quality, especially with jpg shhoting was a deception compare to K100D!

I would never change my K100D for a K-7 !

I will sell my K10D and shop a K-X wich I suspect might give joy for it's superb picture at high iso and a good burst rate!

We own(nearly) all Pentax DSLR models and from where I stand, the K200D is most likely the most versatile of the bunch.

Here are a few highlights the K200 has over it's predecessor:
  • CCD + PRIME + DDR2 System
  • Dust and water protection
  • Dust Alert
  • Better Display
  • Improved DR
  • Optional Grip(with seals)
  • Dedicated RAW Button
  • Improved Power management
  • Digital Preview
Having said this, our K200 has become our dedicated vintage manual camera, we've tried many brands and models over the years and this unit has come out on top as a the only DSLR that seems up to the task of handling manual shooting in a versatile and productive way.

My two cents anyways.
Cheers

PS. It took a katzeye(with optibright) to get the unit up to snuff on the viewfinder end of things.

Check it:

The K1000 was a legendery SLR. I have one myself. Pentax DSLRs started with the *istD.
A wierd name IMHO. SR became available with a DSLR named K100D. Not with the previous DSLRs. K1000 =yesterday; K100D= today. And then there was the *Super* That was the first thing that came to my mind when it was released. Maybe that is the angle Steave is referring to...............
