It is a Power Genix NiZn.

It needs its own special charger, but it works great with the K-x. I can now keep my lithiums as a back up and use these full time.

There have been many reports theat Eneloops in certain K-x's don't work.

For the new batteries I set it on Auto.

Could you quote them? I think I went through all threads about batteries here and on DPR but I have yet to see "many reports" that Eneloops are not working in K-x.

i've had nizn's for months on my k2000. works great.
k2000 and k-x may share the same body, but may have some different battery circuits.

in any case, it seems to work great on the k-x as well as indicated by wll

I read one amazon review of these batteries that indicated they have a high initial voltage output (something like 1.85v/cell) - is this a concern at all with these new battery types?

out of the charger, the voltage is around 1.75 volts. similar to energizer lithiums.
they quickly drop to 1.6v which is the battery's nominal voltage

Lame, can't use standard NiMH charger? Wonder why, if these don't work with -dv or 0dv smart cutoff correctly.

If you look into the white papers sited at the depoteco.com reference above you will see that because of the chemistry these batteries are actually harmed by slow charging. That's why they need a different charger -- maybe not quite so Lame.

And to pxpaulx: any EE designing a product would take into account both over and under voltage. Do a search on a buck-boost voltage regulator and yes I would bet your next paycheck that the K-x has such a device in it.

Who said anything about slow charging? My charger does 1.2A with a 25% duty cycle to each of 4 cells for cooling.

I am curious how the mAh and mWh rating works when dealing with devices that regulate below 4x1.6 V.

@ Eurditass: Ok then but most chargers for non NiZn batteries default to trickle charge after the battery has been fully charged. My reading of that paper indicates that any trickle charging is detrimental to this type of battery

I didn't see where it mentioned trickle charging, is there more than one white paper?

My charger is pretty light on trickle charging, more like maintenance pinging: 10 to 40 mA for about a 1/4 second, then resting for 8 seconds, the equivalent of 1.25mA a second.

I abhor trickle charging, I'm sure many battery chargers kill batteries this way.

Sorry. I did a fair bit of research this morning on NiZn. Go to the PowerGenix website and read their charging procedure. The Next Generation Battery | PowerGenix

But you won't find the admonition about trickle charging there, look here Nickel-zinc battery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia under Charging.

I believe that the comment on Wikipedia about starting at 1.9V with C or C/2 current is another reason that our La Crosse or Maha chargers will not work.

Trickle charging (or soft charging) works fine for NiMh precisely because it keeps the heat down and vastly extends battery life. You do, however, need a good charger. There's too much off-brand el-cheapo stuff out there.
