Trouble with Remote Shutter Release with K200D

Hi All,

I'm new to posting to this forum, which I've been finding very helpful. However, the thing which brings me here now is that I bought a Canon RS-60E3 shutter release cable to use with my Pentax K200D, as per the recommendations of some other K200D owners on this forum. I just received the cable release in the mail and tried it, but it doesn't work. This is the first time I've used a cable release with a digicam, and might be doing something wrong. I tried it with my camera set on Auto, on Manual mode, and also on B, and I also set the focus to manual.

Any tips on what I might be doing wrong? I push the cable release's button and it will auto focus if I don't use the MF, but it won't release the shutter.

Thanks for any help,

Tamia

The shutter release cable appears either defective or non-compatible. Are you sure the plug is fully inserted into the jack as there are 3 contacts to be made? Or perhaps your camera's jack is defective.

I only have the Pentax CS-205, but it is a true 2-stage switch that mates perfectly with a Pentax DSLR. A slight press gives focusing, and a full press releases the shutter.

Welcome to the forum Tamia.
I don't believe a different brand's cable release will be compatible with Pentax cameras. You must get a cable release dedicated for Pentax dSLRs, whether genuine or 3rd party. But make sure you get one with a lock-down feature for long exposures.

I have a 3rd party one that has worked perfectly each time, and it is very cheap, e.g.: Remote Shutter Release Cable Pentax Samsung Contax N - eBay, Other Accessories, Photographic Accessories, Cameras. (end time 06-Dec-09 00:56:42 AEDST)

Thanks Ash and tomwill. I'm a bit red-faced. You're right, tomwill, I did not insert the plug completely. Initially, I stopped pushing when I met resistance. I tried again on my hike, and pushed a bit harder. A nice firm click and it was good to go. Worked flawlessly!

Thanks for the help.

I use a bit of 1 inch gaffers tape to add a flag to the cord for pulling the cord out. This is pretty helpful in winter when wearing gloves.

Thank you

To my knowledge, Canon and Pentax are compatible - schematic's the same and are co-listed in commercial products.

Did you go into the Function mode on the camera and set Remote mode? User manual?

Yes, that remote is compatible with the Pentax.
As Tamia found out, it takes a really firm push to seat it properly.
I ran into the same problem. Went back to the forum threads that
mentioned this release and sure enough that was a regular concern.
"How hard do I push? I don't want to damage anything."
Answer - push until seats properly and all will be well and no damage done.

I was especially pleased with it on my K200D when photographing
some fireworks on Labor Day.
Tripod, Remote Release, Instant Review=On, sat back and pressed away!
P&S folks behing me were amazed.

TomK, it was your comments about shooting fireworks with this shutter release which convinced me to give it a try. Russell-Evans, I like that gaffer's tape and will use it for cold weather shooting. Pacerr, I looked in the manual for references on using a shutter release but found nothing to help me determine how much effort to use when connecting it to the camera.

I have been using the K200D for about a year now and have shot thousands of pictures. I've been very impressed with the quality of the photos and the ability of the camera to cope with environmental extremes in all weathers. I'm considering adding another Pentax body to my kit, and at first was drawn to the K-X but am concerned about the lack of weather sealing, since almost all my work is done outside.

I'm finding this forum to be invaluable for learning more about digital photography and Pentax use. Thanks, everyone!
