Even though the face is under a cap peak so very much in shadow - this still makes a very interesting composition - to get the right "compromise" exposure - used +2/3 stop comp -

Pretty high contrast to tame -

Partly interesting because of the way the eye-lids and even lashes show in the shadows -

No hat....and even
a smile.

Turn around...

Don't think it's getting any brighter there ...

didn't get the memo about hats....

ludicrously dark....
but the K-x still managed to focus and meter....

still haven't quite figured out when this head-on shot is just right,
so that it "jumps" at you ....
but I think I usually manage to get one

one of his "trademark" moves - two drum sticks sandwiching the hi-hat...

A few from last night
including one that was under truly ridiculously low light -

No, not this one - this is kind of the norm for me, for off stage shots - just from another (interesting) angle.

not this either....

interesting reflections

OK, this one:

Original - only resized with EXIF attached

metering segments:

Enough of that, from last week -

This may be one of the last posts in this thread - as I've recently bought a Pentax K-5 (the original) at a very advantageous price -

I was looking seriously at the K-30 - as that offered really advanced features including weather-proofing and real pentaprism at a budget price - I was just waiting for the K-30 price to settle down so I would not have to pay the premium/penalty of a new introduction - when I noticed the K-5 dropping in price - when I saw the K-5 on offer for $684 shipped I could not resist.

From my faithful K-x

as usual plenty of playing off stage:

see the tenor sax player in the extreme right of the pic?

moving the mic off stage and playing from the floor in front of the stage made for interesting composition - but it was
difficult to balance the main subject almost all back-lit to the directly lit stage:

but even that was nothing compared to these shots:

the playing here was so spirited I had to try to get a shot - almost nothing to focus on - I think in the end I had to use either the fire extinguisher label or the sign above pointing to it.

Original resized only EXIF attached:

metering LV segments:

The shot before was probably just as ridiculous -

EXIF attached

metering LV segments:

Nice shots. I love seeing music in these kinds of settings!

I went from K-x to K-5 last year. You'll love it, especially for shots like this.
A fast zoom like a Tamron 28-75 2.8 would also round out that intimate jazz shooting setup nicely!

Thanks mattb.

I look forward to using the K-5 in earnestness tonight at the same dark jazz club -
with the same two humble kit zooms, for now.

You will be amazed at the shots you will get with the K-5. I've enjoyed your pics with the K-x as I still have mine. Just make sure you come back here and link us to the new thread with the K-5

Thanks to all who have encouraged me - I have just posted:

K-5 in Use

where I have done some comparisons between my experience using the K-5 in earnest for the first time in the dark jazz venue and my trusty K-x.
