This is an interesting topic.
Red is always problematic, with any camera.
Red has weaker contrast than green and blue.
I don't know why this is so.
Anyone?

Examples:
(x = lines per image hight, y = contrast)

Make sure you have turned Noise suppression OFF, or if at high ISO, to its lowest setting. Shoot RAW and open it in whatever your PP program is. This looks like noise suppression to me.
Bingo!
Let's look at the 'NR-off' version:
Digital Cameras, Pentax K-7 Digital Camera Test Image
Click on the image for the IR-supplied jpeg, or download the raw and see in your application of choice. Pentax is really hurt in that test by the less-than-inspired choice of parameters, and probably by not so good NR algorithms.

As per the post below by UnknownVT, this example shows a definite difference in contrast between the K7 ISO1600 shots: the "NR Off" being much more contrasty.
So, this is a JPEG sample, and I wonder if one would get the same results from a RAW file?

Even the JPG with NR OFF gives quite respectable results -
(esp. when compared to the default NR version)

EXIF still attached.
