girlfriend dropped camera!!!!

So last night I was with my gf her mom and little brother at a light show and I went off to go find water and sodas. Well my girlfriend was holding my camera over her shoulder and went to hand her little brother off to her mom because he was getting heavy and BOOM! My camera hit the ground

The body works fine but the kit lens that was on it is now messed up sounds like there is some grinding in the focus ring now and the zoom gets stuck sometimes. Is there anything I can do about fixing it? Or should I just pitch it?

I had a similar incident with a K20D and 55-300mm. Fell about three and a half feet and landed on the lens on solidly frozen asphalt. There was no physical effect from the fall, other than a shattered lens hood, but focus was off. I sent the lens in for repair and Pentax Canada charged me $158 (hood not included), so may not be worthwhile with an 18-55. Look on the bright side, its a good excuse to upgrade.

I just sent the K20D to be checked too, because I don't think it was quite right since it was dropped. No quote back yet.

Yup. When you're done mourning you should pick up a Sigma 17-70!

Yep, dropped my K10 with the kit lens once too. UV filter too the hit but the kit lens sort of sticks at either end of the zoom. Not work repairing IMHO.

Recommendation to all, drop girl friends not cameras!

agree with d. bradley above except instead of the sigma get the tamron 17-50, took a quick gander at your flickr shots and you are more than ready for a good upgrade.

NaCl(the Tammy is faster (being f/2.8 constant aperture) and somewhat sharper lens)H2O

18-55 WR? That would be the most cost-effective option.

I've dropped my Pz-1p onto concrete, and it's ok, aside from a mark on the body. Still use it to this day.

If you were satisfied with the 18-55mm, replace it with the 18-55wr for $139:

Keep the girlfriend, everyone makes mistakes.

Not mentioned yet is the fine Pentax DA 16-45 as a possible 'upgrade'.
All the best in your next lens purchase (yep, it's best to toss out that broken kit lens. )

Don't just toss it. Recycle it: keep it as a paper weight or pull it apart as a learning experience. See if you can turn the front element into a magnifiying glass and show the 'little bro' how to fry ants.

Don't toss it as you might need it for parts..you'll never know.
You might need to replace a mount or might want to buy a lens with a damaged mount which others might be selling for cheap.
You can also sell it off ebay as-is (broken) for parts.
Others might still have a use for it and would buy it.

Sorry to hear it.

Somewhere i read that the most frequent cause of dropped cameras is passing it around for others to see the photos on the LCD. Camera goes from hand to hand until someone muffs it.

After reading that, i may hand my camera off to someone to look at, but i always keep my neck strap in hand, just in case.

Yeah, as everybody says... don't bin the thing. There are lots on here, myself included, who would willingly pay the postage to have a broken lens sent their way!

You do see brand new kit lenses for sale at $50 occasionally on Craigslist so you might be lucky.

My camera bag tipped at Bow Falls in Banff, Canada and my Canon 18-55mm went crack crack crack down a flight of steps.

It survived almost unscaithed!
