I've managed to keep the aperture between f7.1 and f9 for probably 90% of the photographic situations on this trip. If all the apertures in that range produce shutter speeds within the 1/100th to 1/160th bracket, I change the ISO by a stop, up or down depending on whether the scene is static or needs a higher shutter speed due to subject movement.
If the light is low, I break out the M 50mm f1.7, but the kit lens accounts for itself nicely in the mentioned aperture range. Most of the interesting scenes I've come across were either bright enough for handholding with the kit lens, or requiring a tripod regardless of the lens, so the only thing I've kept from the 50 so far is some low-light video.
