Tricking the K20D's filename system

For reasons I'm still trying to understand, my K20D went from IMGP1958 to IMGP8034. I think I accidentally inserted the active card from my K100D and took a few shots before realizing what I did. Whatever happened, my archives are no longer continuous, new shots taken with the K20D are using the incorrect numbers, and I'm picky enough to want the numbering order restored.

I tried the following and it didn't work:
  1. Formatting a fresh card in-camera
  2. Renaming the most recent and incorrectly-named file from my archives
  3. Pasting this file into the card directory
  4. Taking a picture, hoping the K20D would "pick up" the previous file number and go from there
Does anyone have a suggestion?

Did this once to mine. If I remember I correctly:

1. Go into the record mode menu. Find memory and uncheck file #.
2. Format the card with the 8*** # file (after downloading the pics first, of course). Think I formatted same card twice.
3. Put in the original card with low pic count.
4. Go back into record menu in step #1 and memory. Recheck file #.

Now take a picture. Should go to next file #.

Good luck.
thanks

I think you need one more step:

3a take a picture with the card that has your old, low number BEFORE checking the memory box again. I did that and it worked to reset the frame numbers back to where they used to be (should be).
