external flash with k-x

Just got a k-x and was wondering if all of the features of a 500 ftz external flash would work with it. Co-worker wants to sell me one, but I'm not sure if the ttl functions will be supported.

No, the TTL functions are not supported in any of the more-recent DSLRs. The flash does have variable output settings and full-power manual, but no auto sensor. Another thread on this forum discussing the AF-500 FTZ limitations with the K20D (which for flash compatibility purposes are the same) is thoroughly explored here:

Welcome to the forum.
You will only be able to use this flash in the manual settings, so if your want TTL, you may as well go for a P-TTL capable flash.

Welcome to the forum grakenverb!
As ash has pointed out TTL is no longer the format, Pentax changed it to P-TTL.
This new system fires a pre-flash first before it fires the real intended flash for the photo itself.
The pre-flash is fired, so the camera knows how much of the power to output just to give the right lighting.
