For example when I have my K7 in Av mode and set the apperture to max, even with the lens cap on the camera is selecting a shutter speed of 2.5" even with no light entering the lens.

Strangely even in M mode the meter will balance out and even overexpose as I move the shutter speed up even with the lens cap on.

Is this normal or not?

What happens if you cover the viewfinder? There is a special cap for the viewfinder so that light creeping through there doesn't affect the light meter.

I just tried this with the K20D. The camera chose 1/6 seconds with the lens cap attached.

Nothing unusual - its not a specific K-7 issue.
In very dim light the shutter speed reading should blink, indicating its beyond the camera's capability. It will still set a shutter speed, but it will not be a correct exposure.

In M mode you can dial up to 30 secs. exposure. If its very dim, the exposure meter will read "something" but its a meaningless exposure.
