How about you start by researching each camera and searching for experienced user testimony of the qualities of each? The internet is full of information, my friend...

k-x is prettier and you can pair it with a DA limited prime.

Very similar overall, but K-x has nicer viewfinder and can be used with Pentax lenses (including metering capability with older MF lenses), whereas A500 only with Sony/Minolta lenses, of which there are fewer. Those are the differences that would matter to me.

Looks like Kx has a lot more issues with QC. First it was battery. Now it's blury photos in certain situations due to SR bugs.

Does Pentax have more lenses than all old discountinued Minolta and Sony combined? Why would anyone need all these lenses, as long as the most important ones are available.

What's Pentax equiv to Zeiss 16-80mm and Sony 16-105mm

Looks like most serious con with Kx is quality control. First it was battery. Now some people are reporting blur in some situations due to SR.

Those are bizarre, relatively slow (in terms of aperture) at the long end, zooms. Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (on any mount) would outperform (in terms of sharpness and barrel distortion) the Zeiss and is faster and cheaper.

A happy Pentaxian is one shooting with primes, anyway.

Tamron is faster but for a zoom lens limited. 50mm is not long enough for a good walkaround lens. 16-80mm and 16-105mm are far more useful zooms. I see Tamron 17-50 is also on Sony mount.

The Tamron is more useful in low light situations. BTW, as far as I can tell Sony 16-105 is a piece of crap: Sony 16-105mm f/3.5-5.6 DT ( SAL-16105 ) - Review / Test Report

You seem to be quite sold on Sony and their expensive zoom range. If you can stomach their relatively poor performing body lineup, why are you asking these questions?

The Pentax 17-70mm F4 is the closest you'll find to either of the lenses you referenced from Pentax (as others have indicated there are other brands available...which you are smart enough to realize also make lenses for the Sony/Minolta mount). An F2.8 constant aperture zoom is infinitely more valuable than a variable aperture consumer zoom - even at the sacrifice of a longer range.

Sony 16-105 gets a positive review on dpr

Sony DT 16-105mm 1:3.5-5.6 Lens Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

Tamron 17-50 is also on Sony mount, but remains a limited walkaround lens. 50mm is too short.

Obviously. I don't expect this kind of posting on this site...dpreview maybe (I went and checked just to see if he was doubling up there as well). This thread had disappeared for an hour from the new threads this morning...thought it had been deleted by the Mods....guess not!
