you shouldn't compare jpg to raw for quality. there's simply no way the processor in the camera will be as good as say photoshop. i didn't say the noise was from the file format, you did. if he had shot jpg + raw, the jpg would've been smoothed more due to compression. the color channel noise would be close, but at nearly 5:1 compression there's a lot of data missing.

Boy, I was getting a lot of noise on my IST and couldn't figure out why. Googled for pentax and found this site - then found my answer on the first search!
