A couple of weeks ago there was a tiny little 45 second segment on a cab driver who returned 4500 dollars to a woman who left it in his cab. Turned out she was visiting from Italy there was a little difficulty tracking her down. The news crew had a brief shot of him walking down the sidewalk, hands in pockets, and smiling shyly at the camera... and then they went on to a five minute highlighting of some blitheringly inconsequential, plodding and jerkwater happenings at a local pottery guild. WHAT?????? I was so pissed.

I'm not generally disposed toward preachiness. But you ask about what kind of world we live in. When an opportunity like this is squandered... to interview, laud, idolize, hand the keys to the city to, this best example, this anti-Madoff, of humankind.... well, it's just a real shame.

Frascati, Actually it was $21,000.00 I saw that story as well and they really didn't make a big deal about it like they should have. In fact the driver turned down a $500 reward on top of it.

Story here

If you Google NYC cabbie returning things. There are lots of cases where cabbies have done this. Unfortunately they can't control what the next passenger might do though.

I just got back from a trip to Vegas and had a few interesting conversations with cab drivers...

This one guy told me about how he is bound to turn things in to the company he drives for, but if they go unclaimed for 60 days he gets to do whatever he wants with them. I can't imagine that is a rule only for their cab company, so you may want to try to track down who he drives for.

Sadly, you're at the mercy of the cabby now, but it would be worth a shot at least. You never know if the guy you rode with is a saint or scum. Worth a shot...

Are we living in a world where you can be certain that it is lost if left in a cab?
Did you at least call the cab company and inform them about your loss so the driver has the chance to return it to you?
I can tell from experience that most people are quite honest and would not take advantage of other peoples carelessness.
I agree. Even if a cabbie wanted to be dishonest, it's kind of risky, as he'd be the obvious suspect if it was reported stolen. You'd have to be both dishonest *and* more than a bit reckless not to turn it in.

Now, I can't say say as much for whoever the next passenger turned out to be. Still, hopefully the OP did at least try contacting the cab company.

Thank you all very much for the messages of condolence and advice.

I left it in a cab in Hong Kong, which complicates things a little bit. I did report it to the central cab lost property hotline. I also reported it to the regional police station in case somebody ever handed it in. No luck, I'm afraid.

People in HK are generally very honest. I've had someone chase me with my wallet when I left it behind once.

Wow, maybe instead of getting new lenses, you should take a memory enhancement course.

One can lose things but lose a Pentax? That must be a disaster, my commiserations. Thanks for posting, it helps all of us to be more vigilant. Your nom de plume 'unsinkable' reflects an attitude of resilience and you certainly display it.

I left a lot of things in Mississippi (some on purpose). That is where I grew up.
