K10D, D80, D200 and 30D

I was recently playing with all three of these bodies as I had access to them all including the Canon 1D Mklll and what amazed me was when I had finished shooting with all four cameras in RAW there was a glaring realization..The K10D at 100 to 400 iso was IMHO the best of the lot. When it came to very high iso settings depending on the lighting the K10D still came out in the top two or three. The observations I made were based on getting the exposure right. The banding issues were nonexistent and the color rendition was superb coming out of the K10D.

The conclusion I drew was the following. The K10D shines when one understands the importance of correct exposure. The other thing I garnered was the importance of understanding the latitude of the sensor in regards to extreme highlights to shadow detail. I have concluded that without a doubt in my mind, that RAW is the best solution for pulling the best performance out of the Pentax K10D.

Seems RAW is the solution for all pentax dSLRs, perhaps except the k100d and k110d. I dont know about the D.

I dont doubt that a k10d in the right hands can trumph the d80 d200 and 30d, but Im not so sure about the 1D... Hell Id take a 1D mk III if someone offered to trade my k10d for it straight up

Hehe, yeah so would I. Then I'd sell it and buy buck another K10 at less than 1/4 the cost of the 1D MkIII, which I have no need for, and then spend the reamaining >$3K on lenses

What do you mean except K100D and K110D ?? are they RAW any worse, I don't think so
If you get the exposure right, they can rival anything

You didnt get me.

What I said means the k100d and k110d has good jpeg results straight from camera whereas with k10d and ist DS its better to use RAW because the jpegs are not so good.

Doesn't surprise me. I think when used properly, with correct exposure and good lighting, any of the advanced DSLR's IQ are within a hairs width of each other. That Pentax put that kind of quality in a sub$1000 body is truly amazing.

Did you use the same lens on each camera? A friend of mine has the d80 and a sony a100. I have a k10d and a gx-1l. I think the d80 and k10d are very close. I like the simplicity of the controls of the pentax, but the nikon can be adjusted more quickly because you can literally access everything with a button on the outside of the body (instead of menu scrolling). The a100 takes great shots but its build quality is not near the nikon or pentax. Even the gx-1l is built more solidly than the sony. We cant really do a comparo because we dont have the same glass to take the shots. Lets face it, its all about the glass

...but...the Canon wins for overall lens selection and mount compatibility (you can mount just about everything onto an EOS camera). The D200 wins for speed and build quality. And the D80 has the same sensor as the K10, so it should be right around the same image-wise. Both Nikon and Canon have way more accessories for their cameras, and way more new lenses, and a more stable future. The D200 has its own banding, but the K10 has unnecessarily heavy VPN.

So, yeah - the K10 takes good pictures.

Amen, apart from the sony part, I think the sony is way too noisy so Id say its not as good neither build quality wise or iq wise.

What annoys me is the lack of accessories and certain lenses. I like primes and Id say Pentax is quite well covered right now, up to 100mm. Zooms as well but obviously missing the f2.8 pro zooms. The annoying thing is that those lenses, and all those accsessories and special items, like T&S lenses that u can get for canon, is all stuff that Pentax used to have. And the only reason why they dont have it now is that they stopped making it!

For instance they are still making FA 50 and FA 35, why not continue to make the FA 135 since there is no replacement? Once a replacement is ready to launch, they can discontinue the old product. And all that stuff they used to have... ring flash, extension tubes, teleconverters etcetc. Sure there may be reasons to discontinue.. outdated product etc. but u cant just kill your own system by cutting out most of your products

Very interesting comparison since the Canon and Nikon lens are considered pro quality, and the Pentax is a high-end consumer lens. The new DA* lens should really put Pentax ahead of the competition when they arrive, because I have noted an improved image quality when using the FA* 28-70 over the DA 16-45 with both the *istD and K10D.

As I owned the 17-40L I can say that the 16-45 is as good and in some focal lengths better than the Canon, especially at the wide end.
