Is the K-7 My next Camera

I love my K10D but its gapping flaw is its low light capability.

What I need is an available light camera for indoor sports (swimming). I have invested in a great 70-200 HSM 2.8 Sigma but it still isn't fast enough to produce shots without tons of color noise.

I have two questions:

Will the K-7 be significantly better than my K10D?

With the Kx getting such great low light buzz, should I wait for that technology to be upgraded into the K-7 or the "next" K model?

I don't want an incremental improvement, I want a fix.

Thanks in advance,
joe

From what i have seen you're going to do maybe a stop better with the K7.

Thanks, Alfisti

Can you tell me how many stops the Kx would be in comparison.

if 1 stop better means 800ISO instead of 400 then I agree. However, my K7's AF abilities are light years ahead my K10D's, so I'd say that's a benefit. However, if all you gauge it by is ISO noise then you'd probably be best to wait or investiagte the KX. Haven't got one of them so can't comment.

Well, tuff question.
I have both a K10D and a K-7.

Sometimes the K-7 surprises me with its low light performance.
Some other times I'm very disappointed.

What I do have come to like is:
- MUCH!!! better low light auto focus. It is only worth buying the K-7 for that.
- MUCH!! better dust prevention and the improved metering.
- MUCH! better features (auto level, auto lens correction, HDR)
- MUCH better handling (it sits better in my large hands, still being smaller)

What I've come to like as well is: Imagenomic - Imagination at Shutter Speed, the community edition is free for using.
It makes both my K10D and K-7 noisy pictures sooo much better.

If you want to see some (unedited) K-7 low light results, have a look here: PentaxForums.com - bymy141's Album: Low light K-7 examples
These 2 pictures were done with ISO 2000.

I guess it is save to say that the K-7 better metering helps prevent many underexposures. The K10D has a problem there.
Also the K-7 brings you at least 1 stop extra.
If you do ETTR the K-7 benefits more than the K10D, I have no solid data but feel that you have 1 stop more there.
Imagenomic will give you 1-2 extra stops as well.

I hope this helps you to decide for the 3 possible options:

1. Settle for the K-7.
2. Go for the K-x, better ISO, save $$'s but suffer functionality.
3. Wait for the K-7 follow up. Pay >$1200, have K-x ISO performance & all functionality.

Cheers, Bert

The other option would be to get one of the cameras mentioned, use it until the K7 sequel drops in price a little and then sell it. You would lose some, but I would guess the K7 sequel will cost in the 1300 dollar range when released (at least) and will take awhile to drop.
