Nope, the 50-500mm is the Bigma. The 170-500mm really doesn't have a nickname...

ummmm, You really believed Canon made a $600 200-500 f/4 lens????
Canon Telephoto EF 500mm f/4.0L IS (Image Stabilizer) USM Autofocus Lens

$5500 gets you a 500mm f/4, no zoom though.

Seriously, folks....Do you KNOW what the aperture/f-stop is in a lens? Nathan thinks he can get a 300mm f/1 and you think Canon makes a $600 500mm f/4....

For someone who was ragging on someone's lens choice, you sure don't know much about lenses.

As for the one post wishing they could stick a Canon/Nikon lens on a Pentax, just buy a Canon or Nikon body...Voila!

Not to take anything away from Pentax,
but I believe canon has a 250-500 f/4 telephoto that goes for about 600.

I'll check it out and edit when I find the link/find out im wrong.

edit: NVM. It's a 70-200. My mistake. Best choice is to go with a sigma telephoto.
They are worth every penny, in my humble opinion.

Wow dude.

My bad. Theres no need to rag on someone because they made a mistake.
Everyone makes them. Including you.

And ALSO...

I believe that there are 2 reasons people buy Pentax camera's.

The number one reason is that people want to contribute to
someone else other than the two near-monopoly corporations.

and the other...

The K10D is the most durable camera on the market, and probably
the best camera for your money ANYWHERE.

He obviously bought a Pentax body because of the durability.

He just wants a better lens selection.

Well for those who don't know it, the aperture or the f-number is the focal ratio. That is the diameter of the aperture.

So if you have a 50mm lens with a max f number of 1.7, it means that the aperture has a diameter of ~29.4mm (50/1.7).

If you want a 500mm f/1 lens it's aperture has to have a diameter of 500mm (500mm/1). That's half a meter of diameter. That means a leans with is width of at least half a meter.
