It all depends on whether Hoya wants to Rule The World, and at what cost. Or which part of The World. I am reminded of Olympus, who challenged both Nikon and Leica with the amazing OM series, then found they could make TONS of money selling little point-n-shoots... and they dropped the OMs, quit competing in the pro-camera world. Consumer crud is apparently more profitable, cheaper to develop, etc.

So, is the 645D a Pentax myth? Will Hoya/Pentax really go head-on with the Canikon behemoths, or will it pull an Oly and retreat into more profitable realms? Maybe the 645D isn't a myth. Maybe it's the camel's nose under the tent. Maybe Hoya/Pentax will run a stealth campaign -- quietly build a better camera, a few superior lenses, and slowly peel away a pro base that appreciates better gear at better prices.

OK, Pentax myths -- Hoya will strip-out the biomedical gear division and sell the remains to Samsung or Sony or Apple or someone. (Are we ready for the iTax?) Pentax will (or won't) announce a flat infinitely-variable-focus and -aperture 'lens' comprised of an array of micro-mirrors that instantly renders obsolete ALL optical lenses (not likely, Hoya is in the glass business). Hoya will buy a major sporting event and require that only Pentax equipment be used to photograph it -- all Canikonympus hardware will be confiscated at the gate. Pentax will be the sole imaging purveyor for the Indian space program. Hoya will announce new optical filters that burn pollutants and particulates from the atmosphere. Pentax will unveil a new 3D image system that will be adopted by the porn industry. Pentax eyecams will be embedded in the faces of numerous celebrities. Is that enough?

Canon gear has already been rendered obsolete at NCAA sporting events!

Another myth is that there isn't enough good Pentax glass but the Canon goobers run around hacking Pentax glass because they can't do much with their on FD lenses on their dSLR so you end up seeing stuff like this all too often.

Yes well, for professional photography, Pentax made a camera called the 6x7. They never really a addressed the 35mm pro market simply because they never recognized it's existence. From Pentax's point of view, professional photographers didn't use toy cameras with postage stamp negatives.
That was for amateurs and greasy kid wannabes.

Interestingly enough, the Pentax 6x7 was the most common film camera used by fashion photographers until the digital revolution came along.
The modern high end digital Canons still can't match the 6x7 for overall image quality.
At the moment, Pentax is out of the pro market, so it's rather hard to figure out how they would be the laughing stock of it.

(A little fanboi stuff for you from Wheatfield).

St. Louis is fortunate (if you enjoy industrial architecture) that in our economic decline our garment district lofts were not demolished to make room for redevelopment. They have been rehabbed over the last 20 years into an artist district and condos just blocks outside our downtown high-rise ghetto.

You might be amused to hear that there is a vibrant fashion photography industry here, but apparently there is. In several recent TV and magazine interviews of photographers the camera mot often in the artists' hands is a 6x7.

"The FA77 isn't sharp."
- from Canon users

"The FA Limited lenses are only manual focus."
- from Canon users

"The FA85/1.4 is only good for portraits."
- from Pentax users

"The FA85/1.4 isn't good at infinity."
- from Pentax users

The last 2 are from Pentax shooters who likely have never used the FA85 but just read it somewhere and have taken it as gospel.

Another one from Canon users is that the 77mm ltd has slooooow auto-focus (exact spelling). I guess it is because they have to manual focus it when they use it on there bodies via a k adapter. OhNo

Agreed with this, they have no idea! Last year I showed the super sharp frog picture to a Canon user one time and he was very shocked by the IQ. I then showed him a picture of the FA 43 LTD, and he thought it was an old school manual focus lens! He had absolutely no idea that these lenses from Pentax existed, let alone he did not know anything at all and he's been a Canon user since the 20D... When you tell a Canon user about the great lenses that are available for the Pentax system, they always think all of the great lenses are MF. They clearly have no idea the DA*, FA*, DA Limited, and FA Limited exists.

I would have to say the amount of "stuck-up-ness" from the Canon forums is just atrocious towards other brands, and mainly to Pentax. Don't know how they managed to grow so much hate against Pentax for whatever reason.
it's called JEALOUSY! As for rumors,
"Pentax is going out of business within the next 6 months to a year"
First heard that one back in about 1978 from the photography professor at my college. He shot Minoltas....

You forget the MX and the venerable LX... both Pro grade 35mm bodies that only failed to trounce the contemporary CaNikons due to Pentax's usual abysmal non-marketing.

Well, I can't link you to a TV spot but I can try to find Mag and/or Rag links.
