It all depends on whether Hoya wants to Rule The World, and at what cost. Or which part of The World. I am reminded of Olympus, who challenged both Nikon and Leica with the amazing OM series, then found they could make TONS of money selling little point-n-shoots... and they dropped the OMs, quit competing in the pro-camera world. Consumer crud is apparently more profitable, cheaper to develop, etc.
So, is the 645D a Pentax myth? Will Hoya/Pentax really go head-on with the Canikon behemoths, or will it pull an Oly and retreat into more profitable realms? Maybe the 645D isn't a myth. Maybe it's the camel's nose under the tent. Maybe Hoya/Pentax will run a stealth campaign -- quietly build a better camera, a few superior lenses, and slowly peel away a pro base that appreciates better gear at better prices.
OK, Pentax myths -- Hoya will strip-out the biomedical gear division and sell the remains to Samsung or Sony or Apple or someone. (Are we ready for the iTax?) Pentax will (or won't) announce a flat infinitely-variable-focus and -aperture 'lens' comprised of an array of micro-mirrors that instantly renders obsolete ALL optical lenses (not likely, Hoya is in the glass business). Hoya will buy a major sporting event and require that only Pentax equipment be used to photograph it -- all Canikonympus hardware will be confiscated at the gate. Pentax will be the sole imaging purveyor for the Indian space program. Hoya will announce new optical filters that burn pollutants and particulates from the atmosphere. Pentax will unveil a new 3D image system that will be adopted by the porn industry. Pentax eyecams will be embedded in the faces of numerous celebrities. Is that enough?
