Checking KX firmware version in camera?

I haven't done any software installation yet because I have my hands full as it is, but is there any way to check my firmware version via the camera itself? I know that it's listed in the EXIF data (whatever that is), but for now, I don't want to complicate things.

I haven't shot with it long enough to discover any "problems" possibly associated with firmware (2 hours don't count), and I'm kind of tentative of doing any firmware updates anyway hearing of some problems here with that.

But just curious about what I'm running.

Hold down the menu button while turning the camera on. The EXIF information will give you a more precise version number, though.

Thanks!

I didn't want to waste the forum's time with this, but a search turned up nothing and there was nothing in the manual index for firmware.

And yeah--I just did it, and it just says 1.00.

Searching is an art I searched for software version camera and found https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-beginners-corner-q/91492-kx-firmware-update.html in the first page

I know it's not fair as I knew that it came along recently

You searched for "software version camera?"

Without using the word "firmware," which is what it is, or the camera model?

I know it is officially called firmware but not everybody will use that word My second try would have been firmware.

Next people write Kx or K-x so it's difficult to search for hence I used camera as it was more than likely to be in the subject or title.

Check your own post and see which words are in there.

And as said, I knew a similar thread came along a short while ago

Officially but not accurately?

Here comes the boring story based on dim memories from when integrated circuits were a very big deal and a very stupid calculator was the size of a small book, performed five arithmetic functions, and cost upwards of USD $125.

We're talking about software. A series of instructions that is loaded from (in this case, a changeable) storage medium rather than executing in circuitry upon which the instructions are permantly "burned" at manufacture.

I think the confusion arises from the old days when (Programmable) Read-Only Memory (ROM/PROM) had the instructions etched in at time of manufacturer or later on with a one-time write capability. The only way to reprogram the device was to completely replace the PROM. This is firmware. The computer does what it's physically manufactured to do. Not really hardware as the instructions are not executed on the medium but simply loaded from it. But we're still stuck with the chips and instructructions as they ship from the factory.

Then we went to Erasable PROM, then Electritrically Erasable PROM then .... well, you get the picture. It was a big deal to write or overwrite.

Current non-volatile (stays there when you turn off the power) memory, flash memory, can be erased and over-written more or less at will. It's simply a solid-state version of a disk or tape used to store the latest version of our software.

The instructions are independent of the memory chips as they're manufactured. Soft as can be.

But out of habit, we still call it firmware.

If I've missed a step here, I've no doubt that someone will correct me.

FYI, I've been keeping an eye on these threads since I ordered my K-x a few weeks ago.

Just received it today, first thing I did was pop in some Eneloop's and checked the firmware version. Sure enough, it's 1.01.

Skeptical, I took a few shots of the wall, stuck them in Lightroom and checked the EXIF data, yep 1.01.

So...if you're like me, keeping an eye on firmware threads, double check your camera before you go tinkering with it, it may already be done for you!

I just installed Pentax Utility 4, and my images say 1.0.

That software should tell me the current version, correct?

Probably the best way to see the Full firmware version -
for example the current/latest version for the K-x is 1.01.00.07 -
- how does one see those trailing digits?

Pretty well known here:

Download PhotoMe

Use it to open any photo file that you have recently taken with the K-x.

Use the Find function (Control-F shortcut)
type in "firmware" in the box (in fact firm is enough) -
PhotoMe displays the (full) firmware version.

to be helpful here are some relevant K-x firmware threads:

Can't find K-x Firmware 1.01.07

Kx 1.01 firmware checksums are different

K-x 1.01 firmware now available

Then there is:

New "silent" K-x firmware fixes SR blur problem

note: the last thread is in Pentax News and Rumors section
- so strictly it is a mere rumor/speculation -
but read the thread and decide.

Killer helpful post Vincent! Thank you!

Since I'm so anal about things being up to date, I did the PhotoMe test and yep, 1.01.00.07. Now I'm sure Adorama is the shiznit lol

Per PhotoMe, I'm 1.00.006.

And terrified about doing any updates.

(I might have left out some zeroes there, but I'm on my iTouch, and it's a PITA to check for sure.)

The earliest Firmware 1.01 update that I was aware of was version 1.01.00.05.

Then sometime between Dec/3 and Dec/5/2009 Pentax Japan quietly changed their download file to version 1.01.00.07 - opiedog noticed the difference in this thread:

Kx 1.01 firmware checksums are different

Pentax USA lagged Japan by a few days.

In fact Pentax USA actually told someone there was no difference between the Japan site and USA versions - while the files were actually different.

Then on Jan/1/2010 Pentax USA also "quietly" updated their file to version 1.01.00.07.

So currently on Pentax USA (PentaxImaging.com) - the FW version is 1.01.00.07 - as at this (Windows) download link:

http://www.pentaximaging.com/images/...67kx_e101w.exe

Just for reference the Pentax.jp download page is:

Latest K-x Firmware Update : Software Downloads : PENTAX
