Although "Face detection" software is becoming better, this ONLY works when you are using Contrast-detection AF, which reads the data OFF the sensor. In DSLRs, you have to be in LiveView mode to get CD AF, and it's PAINFULLY slow. You generally use Phase-detection AF, which uses seperate sensors and is done before the mirror flips up. These sensors ONLY detect contrast, and can't tell a face from a tree branch. And there are only a discrete number of them, so the AF system can NOT look at the entire scene and determine WHAT the subject should be.

Your friend needs to get a reality check. He probably should have stuck with a Rebel (I own the Xsi, it's a fine camera, but I do NOT put it in AUTO )
