The K-7 can't sync past 1/180 of a second.
There's no way you're going to get it to sync with a flash at a faster shutter speed than that. Even if you set it to 1/200 or 1/500, it just won't fire.

There is an unsual way to resolve a fast synchronisation with a flash. Use the camera in full manual (aperture, shutter, focus) with a flash On in a dark room (or in the darness of night). You need total darkness for the best result and a fast flash can help to get very sharp photograph.
I was able to get some nice shots this way with an older Pentax film camera, and I was able to do the same with the FZ-20. I have not tried the K-7 but it should definitely work.
Hope that the comment might help...

Yeah sadly, other brands will let you use flash above their sync speed. This results in seeing the shutter in the frame and therefore a dark band comes into frame. This can be used to good effect, but Pentax actually disables the hotshoe and sync port above 1/180! Argh!!

Note also that some remotes may have a hard time syncing with the camera's max sync speed. (i.e. eBay and Elinchrom Skyports... hard to sync above 1/125 - search for my other rant on Elinchrom if interested)

won't work...k20d doesn't send sync signal over 1/180 as well nor did my old k10d.

There's hack if you have a pentax flash...run HSS, then connect the trigger to your flash's PC port. You'll have fun metering unless you overpower the flash w/ studio strobes...

Very cool and obvious idea! (hitting self in head for not thinking of it)
I will definitely try that. A little duct tape over the flash couldn't hurt, could it? :-)
Of course at the power that HS sync allows, probably not much issue overpowering the light, so I won't have to tape over it and risk what might result.

Consider the flash duration when you try stuff like this. A lot of powerful flash units have remarkably long pulse times, often in around 1/200 second.

ARGH!!! I Hate Pentax engineers!!!!
The PC sync socket is shut off when Hi-Speed Sync is enabled.

Guess I need to do a real hack and break some parts to see what I can piece together. It makes sense that if I could get at the middle pin, it could fire another flash as well.

It just sucks that Pentax cripples their higher end cameras!!

You don't connect the other trigger to the pc sync socket on the body...you connect it to the pc sync port on the flash...

the 540 flash has an external 5P sync port, so you'd have to get an adapter for this to your trigger...

Hopefully that will work. I'm still pissed that Pentax cripples their cameras.

Get a manual lens with leaf shutter (you need an adapter as well), they'll sync to 1/500th :P
