Old Lenses on KX

I have some old lenses from K1000 days. When I put them on my kx the F number on the screen flashes. Reading the manual does not seem to help. I read that all K mount lenses work so what am I doing wrong?

There is a 'a use aperture ring' setting you need to enable.
Camera has electric contacts to read lens aperture.
Aperture contacts started with the 'A' lenses.
K and M lens haven't got them.

K and M will shoot normally in Av but will always leave lens open wide
In Manual, you need to hit the green button so the camera stops down to what ever you have the lens set at and takes a reading, and sets shutter speed accordingly.
Camera stops down lens as normal during shooting.

have fun
pete

Hi Peter,

first you have to set "using aperture ring" to "permitted" if its a K or an M rather than an A lens (menu/C/4)

I believe the focus mode will be set automatically to manual, but I've been flipping the switch to manual just to be safe. you will still get a beep to confirm focus.

If the lens is an "A" you can use it in aperture priority (Av) mode and control the aperture from the thumb wheel if you have the lens set to "A"

If the lens is an "M" or a "K" with no "A" setting, you must use the camera in Manual (M) mode- which will in effect be like aperture priority on an old 35mm film camera- set the aperture using the ring on the lens, and then press the +/- button, which will stop down the aperture and take a meter reading, automatically setting the shutter speed to the desired setting- you can now take a shot. At least, that's how I think its working on mine!!!

cheers

Dan

please read my Av comment above
There is no 'must' about it, just wide open !

What Transit said!!!

But Pete, you first have to assign the Green Button to TV shift, correct?

yup, with the k and m lens you are better off shooting Manual and for best exposure, if you have it, use a hand held meter to check the light.

Ira and Transit don't yet know how to use their cameras, so I'm not sure why they are posting their inaccurate advice as "answers". As someone else linked above, everything you need to know is here: http://support.pentaximaging.com/documents/908

The first reply seemed to nail it IMO...

The first reply is fine, as far as it goes. However, it doesn't mention the menu settings required for the Green Button functionality on the K-x (which has gotten a lot more complicated since my K200D). It also gives the impression that you can't use K or M lenses in anything other than wide open.
