k7 is SUPER QUIET! Some people might get offended when they pose and think you don't take their shot, lol. Happens to me all the time. 'Did you take my picture?"

Hi Pat

Forget this thinking of buying k-7 or K-x, just sell all the gear and enjoy a nice cruise Did I mentioned I might be interested on some of your lenses ?

(now, seriously, go for the K-7 and WR lenses)

I've been messing around with the K-7 a bit for street photography, and in most urban situations (street, bus, etc.) you can shoot with relative sonic impunity – subjects within 5-10 feet don't seem to notice the shutter noise.

It's not as quiet as my Olympus XA, or my Konica Auto S3 with their leaf shutters, but it's damned quiet for an SLR. Many db quieter than my FM2.

K-7 is almost soundless... K-x is louder than K10/ K20 since it doesn't have WR, I think it dampens the noise quite a bit on thos emodels...

Honestly, will a bird hear the shutter first or see a large camouflaged mass slowly moving towards it first? ;-)

No-one here will dispute that the K-7 has a quieter shutter than the K-x. The K-7 has about the quietest shutter on ANY DSLR, period. I've used both - the K-7 is hands-down quieter. There are also Youtube videos that you can look up that let you audibly check out the shutter noise of both too, if interested. This is not to say that the K-x shutter is deafening, but the K-7 is certainly quieter, because for one thing they designed it to be quieter.

The Kx is definitely VERY loud, and the K7 is very quiet..

I remember hearing a huge clunk when I watched some videos on the K-7's shutter. Maybe I was wrong though, but haven't Pentax cameras always had incredibly loud shutter sounds? My *ist DS was almost ridiculous sometimes.

In my experience in trying out the K-7 and owning the K10/20, the K-7's shutter is much more dampened than the latter.

Don't worry about the pointless high ISO comparisons, coming from film you will be amazed by the opportunities presented by the K7's high ISO.

For someone experienced the K7 is hands down the better camera, and the price is not too extreme.

You'll be very happy with the K7, especially with the lenses you already own.

When it comes to birding, let me tell you that the K7 has made quite a difference, compared to my K20D: try shooting in continuous mode with the K20D when you're close to a nervous bird ... do the same with the K7 ... much better! Much quieter!

As others have replied the K-7 is much quieter than the K-x. This is in part due to the weather sealing I think. I have the K-x currently and have been thinking about moving to the K-7 for this very reason.
