K-X

First I bought it, then I voted for it.

Alas, it bricked yesterday shortly after changing batteries from NiMH to lithium.

May I re-think this question?

PS: It woke up when re-introduced to Eneloops, even though set to lithium. Subject for another thread.

The battery setting only determines when the camera deems the batteries to be depleted. It does not determine whether the camera will work or not.

I would think a K20D will be a good second body. You could live it on a firmware that make the SDM lenses as screw drive. Just in case your SDM lenses fails.

As far as I know, there is no such firmware for the K20D, only for the K10D.

I would wait for a new "top of the line" camera body only if it improved one or two major items on the K7: high ISO handling and perhaps a faster AF.
For the moment, the K7 is great for what I use it and my back up is a K20D, which I probably would not dispose of.

I would take an *istD if you have manual aperture lenses because it is the best metering body with manual lenses, and it has TTL flash as well as P-TTL

If you don;t plan on legacy lenses, you are pretty much wide open on selection.

Maybe a KX for reported better high ISO, or a K10 because they are good bodies and relitively inexpensive.

I voted for a Kx as a second body choice. This is based on the very attractive price and low light ability. This is all hypothetical for me as I don't own a K7. Unless I win the lottery, my K10D will become my backup body when I upgrade.

I'd say get another K-7. If the first K-7 goes down for any reason then you know how to setup the 2nd one just like the 1st and continue on with the day seamlessly.

I voted for k-x for its low light high iso ability to take up the slack of the k-7

Well I think the K-x is the obvious choice here, but if you want to pay less then why not the K100D? You might end up making your K-7 the backup if you get the K-x anyways.
