K-x Video and USB Microphone?

I have been seeking a work around to use an external microphone with the K-x. Is it possible to use the USB port to record video, that is if there was a firmware update?

I know that you could synchronize audio to film using an external digital recorder, but it would be great if you could do so directly.

Any feedback or idea's on this subject?

Ben

I've written an entire article on the subject: Capturing Sound For Video.

If the Kx does not have a stereo mic in, the easiest option is to use an external recorder and synchronise the old fashioned way... with a clapboard.

You can certainly use the USB port to record the video and audio output of the K-x, via the I-AVC7 cable or similar Pentax AV cables, like so:

That is really only intended to let you playback your video on an external monitor, or hook up a external monitor to help you compose your video.

But it would also allow you to connect the camera directly to an external video recorder, which may also then have it's own microphone inputs and/or video out.

The only downside of this approach is that the video out on the K-x is composite video only, which may not be as high quality as using the files recorded directly in-camera to the SD card. The composite video output from the camera is only NTSC/PAL, which may mean it is just (for example) 625 lines PAL, not full 1280x720 HD. But doing it this way may be useful in some scenarios.

All this gets rather messy so if you are serious about video it may be easier to just get a K-7, which has a external mic plug and also allows full HD output via the HDMI terminal. The K-7 also of course supports higher resolution HD video than the K-x.
