On a budget: Kx

but if you have the budget to get a 550D I'd recommend the K7

For the price of a 550D, you might as well get the K7

you really want a class 10 for video stuff. i have a feeling khazor is not satisfied with his 550D/T2i.

Just get the K-x. The 550D is crap, along with the rest of the Rebels, and I'm allowed to say that because I've owned just about every one of them. Really, you won't be happy with them though, there hasn't really been a major design change in them since the Rebel XSi which I've had and hated the cheap plastic feel of. They're just not fun, and the high ISO has been greatly exaggerated by places such as DPreview.

I felt that too when I borrowed a 550D and a 500D,
there is this cheap plastic feel that when you hold it you feel like it would break easily,
I dont like the construction of the body, the Kx feels more sturdy and tough..

Almost every Canon entry level DSLR since the Rebel XTi feels exactly the same way, I personally like the XTi and have one because it actually feels better than the plastic on the XSi and cameras above it.

I agree. One of the reasons I got my K100D (1st DSLR) a couple years ago was because the Rebel felt too flimsy. A couple weeks ago I went to Best Buy to grope a T2i, and I was surprised to find that it, too, felt chinzy. Seems like a fine camera, otherwise.

I think out of every camera I've ever tried, the K100D felt the best. Well, not for me though, because mine had a cracked bottom plate so it felt kind of awkward having it move around and such when I gripped the camera. But if that was fixed, I'm sure I would have never really wanted to get rid of it.

Well I've had my T2i for a week now, and with the battery grip filled with 2 batteries and the 70-200mm f/4 IS on it, it does not feel chinzy at all.It is just tiny and light. In fact today I pulled out my gripped K20D for the first time in a week and it feels like a frickin boat anchor The K20D is definitely a better built camera by far, heck it even feels better than my old 5D did.It is now my backup to the T2i until the 1Ds mkIII successor comes out.I bought the Rayqual Japan M42 and K adapters for the Canon and so far every one of my PK lenses and Takumars work great on it, and live view focusing is a dream.I never dreamed I would ever buy a Rebel, but they've come a long way since the 350D (that DID feel very chinzy to me)

I would second the suggestion of the NX10. I have a feeling that mirror-less cameras are the future. Plus its a very nice camera, though perhaps a little lacking in features.

Not true! Canon 500d has worse IQ than the 450D (read DPReview review of the 500 d and look at the test images).

The 550d is better all round than 500d and almost as good on noise as the KX but the increased resolution is a big plus point except that the camera requires the very best lenses (read EXPENSIVE) to get the best from its resolution.

Go play with some raw files. Per image area, the 500D definitely outclasses the 450D (and even edges the 50D on high ISO performance). Dpreview compares 100% crops, which instantly biases comparisons towards lower pixel-count sensors.

This is often said, but it's a bit exaggerated. Stop down the kit lens to f8 and it does pretty well, the nifty fifty (which is pretty darn cheap now) is excellent above f5.6, and there are a plethora of lenses under $500 which are quite capable of delivering the benefits of the 550D's resolution if you use them properly.

I wouldn't say that it requires the best lenses to make the most of it's resolution, the 18-55mm IS kit lens is a really spectacular lens, I've had one before and I really liked it.

A friend of mine at work is in a very similar position as the OP -- he has a new baby, and is considering the 550D with the 18-135 lens. I try not to be partisan about this, but I can't help but think that he'd probably get a better camera for a little less if he got the K-x with a DA17-70.
